Followup on my throttling issue. I removed the heatsink to find out that most of the thermak compound had somehow seeped oout and the top of the die was a bubbly weird colored mess where there was any left. I cleaned everything reapplied compound and reseated.. Idle temps dropped by 10C and load temps are down from 87-90C to 73-75C. Throttling is gone at 1020mV max +10% Power Target and fan profile set to 1500RPM-2400RPM/70C-85C. Very happy withhow it turned out!!

Oh! That's not the first time this happens to an OCN member, last guy had a PowerColor if I'm not mistaken.

So maybe time to issue a warning?

When I get the balls to dismantle my brand new video card/I feel like voiding the warranty I will deff do this, but the Nitro cards don't seem to have that issue as much, plus my max temp (ever) was 79C @60% fans and that was just a spike, so I think mine's most likely alright.

I might have to check my card's TIM out just incase!

Any coooler with heat pipes will make the ref 480 shine if you ask me...it's only a 100-120watt GPU. Heck from my experience testing this card, just open that reff cooler shroud and add 2 120mm fan, it will solve your "sound" problem

How about mounting them? Any suitable brackets that would go on smoothly that you could recommend?

I remember back in the 9800PRO days there used to be Zalman PCI cards for extra cooling VGA.. Like this:

Apparently now they sell this

Would you recommend?

I recommend you avoid these. The fan on the reference cooler creates huge static pressure, the shroud is required to direct and assist that. The reference heatsink is not designed to disperse without it. I believe low-powered fans, even with sufficient CFM, would not be able to effectively cool the card with that heatsink on. You need a new heatsink if you want to use regular fans.

EDIT: The second picture you posted is total nonsense. You can clearly see the heatsink going to the back of the card. What the hell is this fan blowing at? The PCB? That terribly ineffective.

hi,

i got an issue with my reference rx 480 + arctic accelero twin turbo 3.

For the moment i didnt use the backplate, but the the hacked off reference cooling stock plate for the vrm and the ram. vrm and ram sinks dont have contact. I replaced the thermal paste of the GPU with mx-4 and all thermal pads for vrm and ram with arctic thermal pads.
Everything is fitting well, amount of thermalpaste is alright. Screws are tightened.

After 20 mins of Doom i get temperatures like this (check max temperatures):

I saw others which had temps around 60 °C, even with an arctic mono.

Any suggestions?

You have to trim the area around the GPU to get the HSF to seat properly. If you did not do this the GPU is not in direct contact with the heatsink. Fix this before you do anything else, its likely that you are getting hotspots on the GPU that can/will lead to damage.

Make 100% sure that the bracket for the HSF does not contact the stock heatspreader anywhere at all.
