Using MSI AB v. 4.3.0 Beta 14. Crimson drivers 16.9.2.

Power Limit raised to 50%
Gpu Voltage stock

Raised core clock By 5 and retested in FireStike until it failed ( ie: screen lock/white/black screen)
Raising core voltage made zero gains

Overclocking mem was the same.

Crimson drivers 16.10.1 resulted driver crashes.

Ran DDU and reinstalled 16.9.2

Repeated steps 1 & 2 with same results.

Not the first time in this rodeo

To the best of my knowledge, these scores fall in line with just about every benchmark I've ran.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_IXv25C7IlycfBJqQD6dkKa5jFU0OLqQ_r6ULsoMBwU/edit?usp=sharing

I have tried using Wattman, it will not allow me enough voltage to get to 1345. All of those benchmarks were at stock(1270/1750). The only change I did there was raise the power limit to +25% to maintain the 1270.

Using Afterburner I can add +96mV. I also raised the power limit to +50%. I set a constant fan at 75%. Set the Core to 1345 and the Vram to 1850.(previous post)

Did a clean install of 16.10.1

Used TriXX to OC. Same settings as above....1345/1850 +50% power +96mV Fan@75%

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/15434890

I would say that graphics score falls in line with the other one. Certainly with the margin of error.

Overclocking the Vram above 1850 seems to have a negative effect.

Have you tried to monitor your clocks and GPU usage during the bench run? I believe you are throttling.

No throttling.....stable clocks. biggrin.gif The core will throttle if I don't adjust the power limit. Add +25% and it will keep 1270.

EDIT: Even at 1345/1850...no drop in core/Vram.

EDIT: After looking at things a little better, I do throttle very briefly during Firestirke Graphics Test 1. It does maintain the Vram at 1850. It also doesn't throttle anywhere else during the test. At 1270/1850 it isn't a issue. It maintains the speeds. I want to say off the top of my head, that 1325 it wouldn't happen in Firestrike, but the performance also falls off. I remember having this same issue with my 970. I finally determined it was due to the power limit in the bios. GPU-Z doesn't show perfcaps, but if it did, I'm sure I would see it.

Oh well....still happy with the card. thumb.gif

The article states that AMD is already in the process of rolling out some sort of improved revision of their current polaris GPU's, but they speculate that these improved chips will get used for the mobile market first.

However, there is also this already posted review:

The rx 480 in this review seems to be way better than the usual , lower tpd than 100W, easly clocked to 1470Mhz with relativly low Vcore of 1,175V.

Could it be that the chip on the reviewed unit is already one of the improved revision/ manufacturing process ? Will all new manufactured cards get these new revisioned chips or will they release a rx 485 revision ?

That card has decent PCB.

Thinking of sending my Red Devil Back and getting MSI or XFX GTR (BE) instead. Does the BE come with pre-selected chips or it's the same as the non BE?

my gtr runs at about 70 degrees on stock clocks (1290mhz) in valley loop so either he has some super crazy cold room temps or some special card. or did he ramp up the fans to 100%? which would make my system go into takeoff mode:D

i also gave 1400 a quick try with 1.175v and my screen went black instantly, so i dont know exactly what goes on that he get such crazy results with his card, maybe he really did get one of the new chips already but that seems very unlikely since they are supposed to not show up in desktop products any time soon...

EDIT: since he is also getting around 100watts on stock clock i am confident that its not the new chip since that would only use like 50 watts. so whats up with the temps? i have no idea, maybe its the glowing fans:D

Kromar: it is what happens when a manufacturer cherry picks you a card from their production line, they do test the cards and bin them to use different VBIOS with different clock speeds, as such they are able to stumble upon these golden cards and put them away for special purposes such as sending out for free to reviewers especially when there was a serious of atrocious results from other manufacturers, you send in a golden card and suddenly your card is amazing and magically beating even the competing otherwise better on average 1060 biggrin.gif
He got a low leakage card that as a results runs cool and clocks like mad.

There is way too big variance in the 14, 16nm processes.
Maybe AMD will use the P10 as a stop gap only for a year and then launch a smaller Vega to replace it in 2017 on a better process.

Well...I got bored so thought I would do some testing....lol

I modded my 970 bios to match the RX470. At least as far a clock speeds.

Results both cards at 1345/7400:

http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/10470821/fs/10481945

I would say I was surprised, but I knew it would be close just by my previous testing with stock bios' on the 970.

I do have a quick question. I just noticed that my 970 clocks my memory down at idle. I want to say with the RX470 in there it was always at the default of 1750. I can't remember if the R9 270X did the same.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Is it normal for it to stay at the default?
