Welcome to the AMD black screen driver bug that they claim to have fixed but never really did. For me it is only completely gone with 16.7.2 drivers. 16.8.x drivers have this issue frequently and it's incredibly annoying. 16.9.1 was bug free, but that could be because I used them for a very short time. I've had it happen once with 16.9.2. I haven't tried 16.10.1.

I can't isolate the reason, other than that it's not hardawre; it never happens in Linux. I sure as hell can't really fix it. What's funny is that this **** happened with the HD 7000 series card as well, at some point, which was funnily enough the move to GCN if I remember correctly. With GCN4 they seem to have changed something, no idea what.

I've already decided to chuck these cards and get back to team green, I gave it the ol' college try with AMD and I've regretted the decision since installed the cards. That being said, they do really well gaming at 4K, there's just too many gaming-unrelated driver issues for me.

i just thought about this

You arent overclocked are you? AMD gpu like to black screen when voltage is too high for the chip. My RX 470 black screens occasionally when at 1.2v or higher but going lower i dont. Just a thought

I already uninstall the previous driver, although not using DDU. I've tried to reinstall the after burner but it still the same.

Oh yes, when I restart the pc. I once experience random fan speed increases. I'm using 16.10.1 driver. Is this driver issue?

Using the same driver, I do have a custom curve set though so might be an issue without a custom curve. The default nitro fan settings kinda suck imo

Yeah, It did go away for a while, but it's back again and worse than ever. I'll try going back to 16.7.2, thanks for that.

So I left the card looping Valley for about 12 hours. I think the coil whine might be lessened. I'd describe it as more of an intermittent electrical buzz now, than whine. Going to give it a couple more days and see if it improves any further.

in case nobody has mentioned it so far, the only thing that works for me is using ClockBlocker (http://www.comroestudios.com/ClockBlocker/Doc/index.html) which prevents the card from downclocking. so that might be a solution till AMD finally fixed this annoying issue.

No it isn't.
You cannot prevent updates in Windows 10. There's nothing anecdotal about that. If there is a driver update bricking computers, you can't stop it. The best you can hope for is, if you have the pro version, you can delay updates. Eventually you've I'll get the update and at that point you pray Microsoft fixed it. I have seen this happen already on many of our customer's computers where an update bricked the computer and I had to reinstall Windows 10. In fact, if you google it you will see lots of people have had this issue. Being unable to control updates is a deal breaker in my opinion. The only thing anecdotal here is you not having any problems.
I'm not saying his problem was definitely caused by a bad windows 10 update, I just said that IF IT WAS he could be screwed, but at least it didn't brick. If he installed the update himself, then he has wiggle room to do something about it, as I recommended in my post.
I have seen this happen quite a bit because my job is repairing computers, every day, all day long, day in and day out.
