My monitor is ~21" 1080p so AA gets turned on for most games. I do have a few older games that don't jive well with AA though.

The no-AA power draw bump also counts when doing down sampling. So 2560x1440 0xMSAA/TAA/whatever scaled down to 1920x1080 draws more power than 1920x1080 2xMSAA8xMSAA.

My bad, its 8xMSAA that triggers the power consumption slump. 2x/4x do not exhibit the same reduction in power consumption.

Hey guys, I've been reading through the first few pages of this thread and I'm definitely interested in upgrading from my HD 7950, do you think it's worth it? I don't have too much to spend so I'm looking to do the following: I want to buy a reference RX 470 4GB, flash it to 8GB, if possible also to a 480 BIOS, then put on a third party cooler like the Arctic Mono and delve into BIOS editing or picking up a pre-made one that's well optimized.

So what I'm wondering is:
- Is it worth upgrading from the HD 7950 to an RX 470? You don't really see comparisons between these to (or the R9 280 for that matter). I'm playing on 1080p 120hz currently.

- Do the 4GB reference models still come with the RAM capaticty of 8GB?

- Have there been any successful 470 -> 480 BIOS flashes?

I can pick up a reference 470 4GB (Sapphire) for €220 while the cheapest reference 480 4GB (XFX) is €250, which is probably the most I'm willing to spend and I don't really want to stick with a reference cooler. For some reason the HIS RX 470 iCooler is cheaper but that has a different cooler so I'm guessing it won't come with enough RAM chips to hit 8GB.

You can't flash a 470 to 8Gb, it physically does not have 8Gb onboard.

It meas it is cooler, more power efficient, and can get better overclocks on air, however gets worse overclocks under ln2 or water.

Means it uses lower voltage and draws higher current. The rest is wrong, you want higher ASIC for ln2 and lower for air but neither will guarantee clocks as its the silicon lottery

I hope that means you can OC to 1420 at -96mV thumb.gif

It also means that everyone here is going to poop on you because we are jealous. You don't deserve that chip! You are not worthy!

Only thing that I do not like is your PSU! WHAAAAT! ...

The MSIs are pricey but they buy the higher binned chips from AMD. The price/performance doesn't add up compared to, say, a reference card or an AIB RX 470, but the MSI cooler is phenomenal, the VRMs are more than capable, and it's the full chip. I hate the idea of having a gimped chip. Plus 8GB of RAM is nice, I've exceeded 4GB at 1080P plenty of times (granted it takes a little effort).

What's wrong with my PSU? $29 is just not expensive enough? biggrin.gif I've had it for 4 years now, no issues. All the specs are good, on paper it looks like a Seasonic or what have you, and believe me I did a lot of research. After I put everything together I used software to look at the power coming out, it's smooth as butter. 10/10 would spend $30 on.

As far as the other 'speculations'

MY NITRO 470 8GB CARD IS 100% STOCK. I have NO overclock, overvolt, undervolt, extended power limit, NOTHING. My card is 100% stock, aside from a changed fan curve and target temperature and I'm STILL seeing over 90C on my VRM1. Are there any other's of you that have these temps at STOCK. No duh they'll jump up when you increase power limits and overclock. But I'm not doing any of that.

Buy a 470 8gb AIB card, you'll be very thankful.

As far as the flashing goes. I'm trying to be nice. There haven't been 4gb cards that had 8gb on board since the VERY first small batch of 480 reference cards that were produced. Trust me, we'd all LOVE it if we could just buy 4gb cards and save $40 and just flash them to have twice the memory, but that just isn't how it works haha. The only reason there were a few early cards that had all the RAM on board, just bios locked, is because they were trying to get the cards out as soon as they could. I'm pretty sure that was on very few cards. And you'll brick your card if you try to flash a new Bios onto it. At least if you try it with the reference cards.

I have the Sapphire Nitro 470 8gb card, and it works great.
