What is the source on this?

Yes it is wrong regarding AMD cards

the stilt, if youre not sure who he is google is your friend but he knows his stuff

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4rzo88/the_stilt_explains_asic_quality_on_amd_cards/

the info in GPUz is based on Nvidia ASIC ratings and even still a higher ASIC =/= higher overclocks that is always 100% down to luck. Higher ASIC on AMD responds to voltage better but requires more cooling hence the preference in regards to Ln2 which can keep things cold. You want lower ASIC for Air cooling.

AMD ASIC is not the same as Nvidia ASIC and ASIC will not be the deciding factor on your overclock. Ive explained this at least twice in this thread and several times elsewhere in the forums tongue.gif GPUz is a good tool but taking everything in there as law is not wise.

OK, latest drivers ignore voltage tables in the BIOS. The card acts as if you are using "auto" voltage settings and overclocking.

Example...

Set core speed to 1300 in BIOS. Set per state voltage manually, top P-state set to 1090mv. Driver applies 1170mv as if I am using "auto" voltage and overclocking through wattman. This happens w/o wattman installed.

Tried uninstalling drivers, going to sweep the registry next.

For giggles I moved back to 1300/1900(1625 strap) and ran some benches...

Valley (1080p, no AA, highest quality): 3732
Time Spy (graphics): 3923
Fire Strike(graphics): 12874

A very solid gain from older drivers. Valley especially, up from 3500.

As far as the flashing goes. I'm trying to be nice. There haven't been 4gb cards that had 8gb on board since the VERY first small batch of 480 reference cards that were produced. Trust me, we'd all LOVE it if we could just buy 4gb cards and save $40 and just flash them to have twice the memory, but that just isn't how it works haha. The only reason there were a few early cards that had all the RAM on board, just bios locked, is because they were trying to get the cards out as soon as they could. I'm pretty sure that was on very few cards. And you'll brick your card if you try to flash a new Bios onto it. At least if you try it with the reference cards.

I have the Sapphire Nitro 470 8gb card, and it works great.

Alright, I was afraid I was too late, thanks for confirming guys. Going to look into some AIB models then. I'm still not quite sure if I really need 8GB though, especially at just 1080p?

Yes.

I, and a few others have pushed the max Vram useage past the 4gb mark a few times (as mentioned, it involves a lot of large texture mods lol) at 1080. For the extra $20 or so, it's worth it. I spent $250 on my 470 nitro 8gb with priority shipping included. Wishing I would have spent the extra $30 and gotten the 8Gb 1366mhz 480 Nitro+. Do I REALLY need the extra bit of power for 1080 gaming? no. Will it help keep power consumption, temps, and noise down? Most likely.

But you gotta remember, as games get nicer and nicer looking they get more and more demanding, get the 8 gigs, you'll never use all 8 most likely, but I'll promise you'll go over 4 sometime soon.

Only happens for me on games using uncompressed textures on high texture settings (which is dumb imo). Most games might use 2-4gb at most and lighting concerns me more than a slight drop to technical texture quality that's barely noticeable
