I got a Nitro RX480 8gb (1306mhz version) and I am baffled by the temps. I had heard the nitro cooler is not the best this season, but seriously look at my numbers :

The card has 84% asic and overclocks like a champ, but I dont need anything mote than a nice round 1400mhz. So it is stable at 1400 with only 1.1v yet, with +50% power limit, when stressed hard the power consumption reaches 170w+ and I get max temps of 78-79c with the fam really loud at 61%/2400rpm

Is that normal? I mean if only 1.1v destroys the card like that, how the hell are you running 1.15 or even higher?

Set a custom fan curve, default is kinda stupid and keeps it a bit hotter

UPDATE: So I had two different XFX 480s both caused absurd flickering on my 1440p 144hz freesync monitor. Just got a Nitro+ in today and the problem is gone. I cant believe the XFX cards were the issue. So crazy to me that two different cards had the same issue.

Also remember, 1288 or 1342 are maximum BOOST clocks. The cards are not designed to maintain them with default settings. The base clock is something like 1050-1100. My RX 470 has a base clock of ~950 with a boost of 1216, and I can not hold much over 1300 without throttling unless I edit the BIOS. Try backing off the clocks and volts. Something like 1266/1.05v (check your stock voltages too, 1.15v+ is too high for default power limits), just to see what happens. You could also use something like HWInfo to keep an eye on more sensors to see what exactly is going out of acceptable range.

NV, OTOH, markets cards by giving the minimum boost clocks. Meaning that you get more performance variance across the range of products. It makes you feel special when your card always overboosts, but perhaps that is just better 'marketing'.

Got my Nitro+ in today. Completely fixed my issue and it maintains its advertised boost clock. Never buying XFX again. 2 bad cards in a row caused a nightmare for 2 weeks.

I have been keeping an eye on your issue. I would have been a little, tiny, wee, tiny, small, little, wee bit sad to see you go to nVidia over this issue. I'm glad you figured out what the problem was. Do you think it was a hardware issue or a result of their firmware?

So, how do you like 144Hz? Are you getting enough FPS at 1440p to make it worthwhile?

Thats bad luck right there man, i too have the Sapphire Nitro +OC 8gb and it's awesome, too bad my FX 8320e 4.8Ghz bottlenecks it in certain CPU intensive games, i am eager to wait for zen but i also want an i7 6700k, oh decisions, decisions...

The fact remains that the cooler seems unable to cope with the heat even at this low voltage frown.gif

Different chips vary widely in how they react to voltage. I'm on the absolute worst cooler and can keep temps out of the thermal throttling range at ~1.2v. My power draw also does not hit 170+ until its at ~1.2v.

Sounds like something someone should extensively test across many titles...

All resolutions. The RX 470/480 can push more data over the bus than GDDR5 2000(8000) can carry.

Because of this you will likely never see the full 10% difference in performance between them (as predicted by the shader/TMU counts) if both have core/memory of the same speed. In that case the difference will be around 5% average, possibly even less for some titles. RX 470 also has the same number of ROPs as the 480, so there is that too.

IMHO the RX 470 is a MUCH better buy because of this. Just make sure to get one that has memory speeds of at least 1750(7000). Any lower than that and you are sacrificing quite a bit of performance.

My Nitro rx470 would hit 80c before I set a custom curve that peaks at 2600rpm. Now I'm rarely over 70c more in the 50-65c range depending on title. The default fan behavior avoids running the fan whenever possible and will go the slowest possible to maintain an 80c target. The fan is loud and they're trying to hide that. If you set a custom curve you can override that behavior but you will get more noise

Tldr, because the default fan behavior and target temp are set for 80c and hiding the loud fan, do a custom curve to fix it
