It would be more accurate to describe it as being similar to the 290/290X difference.

Here we're talking about gpus that share the same architecture and where specs vary less than 15%. Hawaii vs Fiji is a whole different situation, 4096 vs 2816 shaders, 512 vs 320GB/s and architecture improvements like delta color compression or improved tessellation.

And it doesn't matter if a shader is unit bound or not, you're targeting a very specific scenario that is very difficult to reproduce. Bandwidth is the major bottleneck on Polaris and in most situations you will be limited by it.
That's the reason why overclocking the memory or tightening the timings yields significant improvements.

I was talking about hawaii vs hawaii and fiji vs fiji vs fiji, they had 10% and 14% unit differences respectively.

If a shader has complex mathematics and makes correct use of the texture units, compressed textures and FP16 buffers, memory bandwidth increases will show diminishing returns. This is assuming you're using it for 1080p or 1440p as that's what these cards are designed for. This is why I suggested an extensive title test as it'll show what ones are truly optimised and which aren't.

Hey guys, I'm looking to get an RX480, just wondering which will be the best for overclocking? Cooling it is not an issue. After reading a little bit in this thread it looks like the Red Devil is not a good option.

I have had good luck with Sapphire cards in the past and see they have a higher memory than most.

Any tips?

Pick either an XFX, Sapphire, or MSI card and hope for the best. There isn't any clear winner as far as which one overclocks the best, it's all up to the "silicon lottery" from what I've seen. The XFX GTR has been one that a few people have gotten lucky on and some reviewers got golden cards that ran cool and high OC (Like over 1400 easily while under 70C)

Edit: I have the Sapphire 470 8gb OC+ card, but haven't overclocked it. I get 60fps average in most games, doom runs 100fps+ and Battlefield 1 on ultra settings at 1080 gets 50-60fps. I'll admit, my VRMs get hot (100C max) and my card gets up to around 75C with the fans hitting almost 80%, but it's a good card. I don't hear it when it spools up like most people say they do. But it does have the 2000mhz memory on it.

XFX GTR or the asus strix have the best VRMs from what I've seen, however it generally comes down to pure chance as to how far you can easily clock a core. Definitely don't go for the powercolor as it has worse VRMs than the reference design.

If you already have a water loop and can afford it then go for a reference+waterblock for simplicity.

Actually yeah... I did.

It was a 2gb Sapphire RX 460.

I had MAJOR posting issues with this card initially. Would randomly not post. No reason behind it either, discernably anyway.

Stopped happening at some point. No idea why (rebooted many times to test).

Not one problem with the 1050ti that replaced it. Was only looking for a nice 4K HTPC card.... RX 460 is a joke IMO.

470 and 480 are great, don't get me wrong. RX 460 is way too underpowered for the price.

Ah, you using DP or HDMI? I know first-hand that a bad DP cable can cause some very odd behaviour, including sporadic POST-ing.

I just bought a 144hz freesync monitor.

I fired up Dark Souls 3 to try it out and i about fell out of my seat. Even with the frame rate locked at 60 freesync makes it SO smooth. I couldnt be happier.
