Maybe a more agressive fan curve will help with those temps, mine goes up to 75ºC load core temp and 83ºC on the VRM's, at 100% fan speed on ROTTR 1080p Ultra. thumb.gif also with 8 GDDR5 Samsung, RX 480 nitro +OC that is thumb.gif

4k is torture for any card as it generally pegs out the entire core and especially the memory controller, it's equivalent to furmark if there's enough foliage or similar objects in the render view.

83C is generally fine for all processors though, the max tends to be 99C. Above 130C is about the point where solder starts to melt so VRMs tend to top out just below that. When it comes to overclocking however you generally need to keep the core under 65C, otherwise there's too much voltage leaking to keep it stable.

I think I have my fans capped around 88% my core only hit 72-75 during my BF 1 play session, and the fans never went above 55%. The VRM1 temps seem to be HIGHER when my fans run faster. It's weird with the passive-looping cool bs they have on the nitro cards. I haven't ventured enough to fully dissasemble it to see if the thermal padding is off or not applied right, but I've also noticed the 470s run hotter than the 480s do.

What core voltage? and if you're using multiple displays the idle clocks (and voltages) will be higher, thus not able to be passively cooled unless your ambient is super low.

I have this little 5" HDMI screen running to monitor all temps and useages when I'm fullscreen. So I technically DO have a second display running. Idle clocks bounce but usually around 300mhz core up to 466 if I'm youtubing.

Voltages are in the second pic

For ref card, change the thermal pad and added some heatsink to the back of the vrm... From 90cdeg to 75cdeg...for vrm after playing doom with Vulcan 4k...

Core idle and the voltages look good. However you seem to only have one memory state which could be making the card run warmer at idle than it needs to. Try adding 1200 and 600 states with the same voltage and see how it goes.

This is common practice as VRMs tend to emit most of their heat onto the PCB itself. The ultimate watercooling method is to also watercool the back of the PCB at least around the VRMs, something you could try doing with some copper pipe if you want.

Hey, any Asus Strix 470 owners here? How is the card? How well does it OC? I was thinking of picking one up to upgrade from my R9 280X, but not sure. I looked at Tom's Hardware benchmarks, it's about 25% to 90% faster on games I play, or want to play. (25% on DOOM, which I wanna get later, and 90% on Witcher 3) Most other games I play, like GTA V, Rise of the Tomb Raider and HITMAN (wanna get this one later) it's about 40 to 60% faster. I feel like it's not a bad upgrade, considering it's got 1 GB more VRAM and uses about half the power (which isn't much important to me, power is cheap here and I've got a 850 W PSU).

I just wanted to know how is the Strix model, cooling, and overclockability, I would like to hit about 1350 MHz on the core.

Thanks.

I got my new system up and running tonight. The card is the XFX RX480 GTR and it seems to be fine temp wise but I can cook a egg on the back plate. I checked the VRM temps and they are running 55c and 27c. Is this normal, I'm not evening OC'ing it yet?

Backplate does get hot. It's normal.
