Even with unvervolt the card hits its TDP? I was expecting that with that kind of undervolting to keep in 130-140W. What about your memory?

I use the default 2200 rpm. At +10% PT it stays at 2200 rpm most of the time and reaches the target temperature of 80°C. With +15% temperatures rise up to mid 80s but i never got thermal throttling. At default power target fan rpm ranges from 1500 to 2200 rpm and temperatures are in the low to mid 70s. Thats for my typical gaming at 1080p. I never used more than +15% PT for extended periods of time because of thermal throttling/fan noise. The reference cooler operates close to its limits and gets very loud beyond +15%PT if you want to keep temperatures in check.

Obtainable OC for given power depends on voltage. For my stock settings (1043 mV max) i need +5% PT to get stable 1266Mhz. If you are at 1100 mV or higher (like 1150 mV for 1266 Mhz in some review samples) there is little chance to get stable clocks without increasing fan speed because you already need something like +30% PT. For the reference card it is really valuable to get high ASIC quality with low voltage because of limited cooling.

Sadly, AIB cards dont seem to get binned chips, because they also use high voltage. Temperature problems are avoided by better coolers, but total power draw stays high (> 200W) and all that heat remains in the case.

First listing of Sapphire Radeon RX 470 Nitro+ in germany starts with €239 for 4GB and €279 for 8GB. Thats some bad value. I am more and more pleased with my reference 4GB model for €219. The reference 8GB model is available for €269 and AIB models (MSI Gaming and PC Red Devil, not yet available) are listed for €299. Right now i would say a non OC GTX 1060 starting at €279 (from Palit available in several shops) is the better deal. Even the basic variants should be able to get stable clocks around 1900 Mhz.

Mining and/or a bunch of jerks buying them simply to resell for a profit.

A 1060 better choice if you upgrade your card frequently...if you hang onto things for a while the 480 is the better buy I think.

I might be returning mine as the MicroCenter I got mine from has an open box Fury for $297...$50 more for a pretty decent boost in performance.

Also realized after installing the XSPC Blade block that it doesn't actively cool the VRMs with water flow...kinda salty about that when they are advertising it as: "Full cover Slim Line Radeon RX480 Waterblock, lower cost, same performance as the Razer."  My assumption of 'same performance' equating to water cooled VRM section...

This is what happens when you make assumptions doh.gif

Still haven't decided exactly what I'm going to do yet
Mate, the ek fullcover block is in stock now,I can't vouch for the 480 block but my 290 block cooled everything including the vrm, I'll be skipping this gen but Vega I will 100% be custom looping

Yup even when undervolted it will power throttle without increased power limit. To stop it from power throttle in furmark it requires +50% power limit when undervolted.
My memory runs at 2175@1000mV

EK block has been available for a couple weeks here as well, but for double the price.  I'm really quite salty that XSPC advertised the Blade as they did..and when I ordered mine the photos of under the cover weren't available so I made a poor assumption.  My XSPC Razer 290X, and every other Razer that I looked up, have active VRM cooling...so when they say "same performance as Razer" one would logically assume active VRM cooling...oh well...

I'm going to work around the issue though.  Going to order some better thermal pads and attach my heatsink to the rear of the VRMs...and use a fan if need be.  This should drop temps quite a bit as they are currently on par with my homebrew setup.

I can't return the waterblock, so I may as well make the best use of it.

RX 470 arrived. German test: https://www.computerbase.de/2016-08/radeon-rx-470-test/. AIB prices start at €219 (that was the RX 480 4GB price). Throttling is still an issue at default power targets on some models. Power draw surpasses RX 480 reference levels on some models. Performance ranges from 87% to 97% of stock RX 480.

PC World and Guru3D showing ~30-40W less power consumption than 480:

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_radeon_rx_470_gaming_x_8gb_review,5.html

Performance wise this appears to be the exact same story as the 290X then 290 launch.  The prices of the cards are much closer together this time with VRAM options from the start.  Looks like 470 is the much better buy if the 8GB custom cooled versions are going to be $210-$220..that's as much as I would suggest anyone paying anyway.

Currently with the XSPC Blade and its passive VRM cooling, I haven't seen an improvement in VRM temps.  Need to alter my homebrew VRM sink to attach to the rear and see if that will bring VRM temps down a little.  If I see a few degree drop, then I will be ordering some better thermal pads to put on the block and on my sink to see how low I can get them.
