I tried everything else (reddit, amd support forum, email) except this, thanks! It's worth a shot.

I think I read somewhere (probably here) that the new driver is enforcing bios signatures again.

Anyway, help guys. A local vendor has several specials for the week. Both the Nitro and the GTR (non-BE) are about the same price. Which one to get? The GTR has a better cooler and seems to be the best overall rx480. The Nitro is a tad cheaper (about $20USD), bigger overclock, but a much crappier cooler. Now the thing is, I have a spare Accelero Twin Turbo II that I was initially planning on using if I managed to score a cheap enough Nitro (just need to buy some heatsinks for the vram and vrm). Do you think the cooler on the GTR is better than the Accelero? The Accelero has 5 heatpipes, 36 fins (or was it 35?), and is rather big. The cooler on the GTR has 4 heatpipes, seems longer with more closely packed fins, but the fins seem smaller.

I believe the Accelero is noticeably better than anything you can find slapped on a GPU. After all, Arctic charge money for it, it has to make a big difference in order to sell smile.gif

My card now throttles because I can't raise the power limit or the drivers will just stop detecting my GPU.

I have an XFX GTR, so I just had to flip the bios switch and everything works, but now it throttles.

Little rant about it: https://youtu.be/KwKsXkkGld8

I also recorded the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LdvRbV3SuM

Cheers!

Yep, new drivers enforce BIOS checks again.

On an unrelated note, I've been poking around for the optimal frequency on my RX 470 Platinum. I hit a huge frequency wall at ~1100. 1100 takes only 925mv (935mv in wattman) while 1200 takes a bit over 1050mv.

At 1100mhz and 925mv I am seeing core power around 75w with 100% load. 1200mhz/1060mv is pulling nearly 100w. It looks like AMD is outside the efficiency curve by a large amount at stock boost clocks (1206 on RX 470). I am losing only ~8% performance compared to maxing out the power limit and tweaking voltages to hold maximum boost for stock clocks, while cutting 25% off of power consumption (75w vs ~100w).

With the reference -1 cooler (no copper inlay in the heatsink, just a chunk of aluminum), temps never go above 75c with fan speeds never going above 1300 RPM. Why is this GPU not in a notebook by now?

Figured I would join in on the temps. This is highest I usually see with my card.

Inside of the case. Took the side panel off to take this because it's stupidly reflective with flash.

No no no, that doesn't look right! I do 1215 @.985v in WattMan, stable and no throttle. Perhaps you got a bad draw with the chip...

Is that voltage reading an error? 1.4v is REALLY high.

I don't hit another huge voltage step until ~1330. ~1125mv gets me to 1325 or so, 1180mv gets me to 1360, and ~1200mv gets me close to 1400.

Actually, just noticed that the new drivers have a MUCH lower VCore limit. Mine used to go up to ~1225mv or so, now it is only 1175mv.

What do you mean? I only see the 1.4 on t he 3.3v on motherboard. Only place I see card coming close is the 1.37. Everything is left at stock on the card atm as it's working perfectly fine for me.

EDIT: not sure if it really makes a difference this card was pushing Fallout 4 maxed out for the amount of time in the original posting of HWiNFO pic. I reset right before I start a new session. Also during this the computer was also encoding a video while I was playing.

Here is the HWiNFO64 expanded.

1.37v is high for ~1300, and I expect setting 1.400v to droop to 1.35v-1.37v. Unless that is a sensor anomaly of course.
