Tbh I have no idea. I've not even looked into setting up an OC on this thing yet. There has been no need to. Whatever this thing does is being done from factory settings.

Hello Guys

After returning my R9 390 2nd hand card from CEX I have bought MSI RX480 Gaming X 8GB from Overclockers.co.uk. I am very pleased with 1080p gaming and temp of the card hardly reach over 67c. R9 390 was going over 80c when under load and it was very loud.

So what you think guys everything looks normal. I have 1080p monitor and play games like MGSV, COD Infinite Warfare and Batman Arkham Knight. Is it important to install MSI gaming app? Can this card be overclocked or does it need overclocking?

Actually, just noticed that the new drivers have a MUCH lower VCore limit. Mine used to go up to ~1225mv or so, now it is only 1175mv.

Hold on a sec. The new drivers dropped Vcore? Doesn't seem to do so to mine and it seems to be just as stable with the same voltage settings on mine.

Looks legit. Wouldn't install MSI Gaming bloatware though.

On my RX 470 platinum I lost ~50mv in WattMan. I.E. I could set just over 1200mv before, now I can't set anything above 1175mv. LLC is also a bit softer now, voltage droop at a given setting is a tiny bit more. Unless there was a glitch in my initial driver installation.

Guys try to keep temperature below 65c while overclocking. I can run rx480 @1400mhz with 1.15v stable upto temperature 67-68c. Above, needs more Voltage. Same goes to undervolting I think.

What are your vrm temps at those core temps? Might just need better vrm cooling

So decided to mess with my GPU clock

if I enable global vsync I'm able to hit 1375mhz pretty easily but @1175mv my VRMs hit 105c stock fan curve which is within spec but I'm not liking it. After work gotta play with it more but if I disable VSync my VRMs start shooting towards 120c unless I max out fan speed. Trying to see if I can get a playable 1400mhz even if I have to be limited to 60fps at all times tongue.gif

I'm thinking I'm gonna sell my spare MSI Radeon RX 480 8 GB Gaming X, because I'm not in the mood to install it in my main rig because it already has one, and my secondary rig is too small. Unless I reinstall everything in a different case, which is too much of a hassle right now.

Other than that, I love my MSI Radeon RX 480 8 GB Gaming X. Only problem is the MSI Gaming App caused blue screens, which I don't know if they fixed yet. Although I'm bottlenecked by my A10-7850K, I get 70 FPS at 1080p in the Lavender Beds zone in Final Fantasy XIV. I get 20 FPS at 1080p in Idyllshire zone in the same game, because of my wimpy processor.

I gotta test my i5 4460, and see if it can handle FFXIV at 720p low. If it does, I'll probably sell my spare 480. If it doesn't, I'll probably swap out cases to install the spare 480.

Let me say first....I'm not a fanboy. I think both AMD/nVidia do a good job in the sectors they target. I'm not here to bad mouth or make a judgement on whatever card anyone my purchase. We all have our reasons for the purchase(s) that we make.

I'm lucky that I have had a chance to test these cards. I love doing benchmarks, it's almost a addiction...lol

With that said, I decided to put together a spreadsheet comparing the following 3 cards:

MSI GTX 970 4gb
AMD RX 470 4gb
PNY GTX 1060 6gb

The only tweak was adding power to all three cards. I used 15 benchmarks. While I do have the VRMark test. I did not include it because I wanted the same driver for each set. The spreadsheet shows the driver set, the settings, etc. The core/memory speeds are with boost for each card. To be honest, boost really gives a advantage to the nVidia cards. Otherwise, all cards were ran at stock settings.

I don't have access to the RX470(Gift for son) at the moment. So the only DX12 tests were Time Spy and the API test in 3Dmark. I may, after the holiday's be able to run some testing using BF1 DX12 and Doom on the Vulkan API, to see how these cards measure up.

Maybe the 3 cards being compared isn't a fair test....all I can say is that these results are the best I can do. I would love to have a RX480 to throw in the mix. If anyone would like to send me one...I promise to let you have it back....lol wink.gif

GTX 1060/GTX 970/RX 470 Comparison Spreadsheet

I will say, this was a good size undertaking. I've spent probably about 60-70 hours testing and compiling data.

I can also say, that all three cards hit their price/perf numbers. I haven't really been disappointed in any of the cards...even the 970 with the whole 3.5gb Vram issue.

I welcome comments, questions, general thoughts. If anyone with a RX480 would like to send me their results, PM me and I can let you know what I would need to add them.

Like a weight-loss plan, individual results may vary. biggrin.gif

I decided to take my HD 6950 apart to break that fear I'd ruin a card by disassembling and reassembling it. Went very well as far as I can tell, I have to test the card out to see if it still works lol but the PC boots and recognizes the card at least haha. But I was looking at the coolers and noticed that aside from having a VRM plate and space for memory cooling, the cooler looks like it would work (and seeing as it's ALL copper and has 5 heatpipes vs the 3 on the 470/480 cooler) and possibly even fit under the shroud the 470 came with. I'm not adventurous enough to take my 470 apart let alone attempt to mod the cooler, but it was just a thought. Extra plates for the VRM's and memory could be attatched, or thicker thermal pads could be used to fill the space as well. But there's the problem of the fan shroud probably not having the correct mounting points. Alas, zip ties COULD work, or some handy dandy modifications could be made also. Maybe one day when my pants sag a bit more in the nether region than usual I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Till then, there's just this speculation.

Pics are attatched (not my pictures of the 400 series cooler by itself)

470/480 cooler VS Sapphire HD 6950 dual fan cooler.
