It was a nice deal you got there, i warn you, i have the same model on a 33-35ºC ambien temps and a NZXT S340 case with a push-pull front mounted radiator with 2 120mm exhaust fans and this card gets hot as **** mostly on Rise Of The Tomb Raider 75-80ºC on ultra full fan speed, other games are nice temps 65-70ºC(i still blame my thermal paste since i changed it, maybe the stock paste was a little better),i think Sapphire somehow made a poor cooler in this gen, and expect little to no overclock headroom, unless you live in a country with something like 20-25ºC and have a good airflow on your case, also i replaced the acrylic window on my side panel with some mosquito mesh for more breathing room in my case, all in all is a good card if you run it stock boost and almost full speed fans, noise is not an issue while gaming at least for me biggrin.gif Good luck man and enjoy it.

Yeah, Sapphire cheaped out on the cooler. Guess they are holding back their big coolers for Vega. I mean, it's "acceptable" in that the card does not fry itself, but pales in comparison to other offerings like XFX and MSI. The fans are good in that they push lots of air and seem to have good air pressure, but the heatsink is just too small. I have a 140mm side fan blowing right across the card so that helps. 30-31*C ambient and it does not break 75*C (Valley, Furmark, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite), but I did have to modify the fan curve so it hits 100% at 70*C. Still, I have to say that the card does look sexier in person than in pics.

Had they invested in a better cooler and made the card 10-20$ more expensive, nobody would have bought it. Sapphire didn't cheap out, nor are they "holding back coolers", they did exactly what they wanted to do - a perfectly balanced card with price and features to cover a specific portion of the market. After all, the tests are out there, everyone is free to see what temps each card reaches, and make and informed decision, you make it sound like they cheated smile.gif

This^^^
I have the 470 nitro 8gb,
Aside from my VRM's my card has only hit 80C a handful of times as a MAX reached, and my max fan useage has never been above 88%. Yeah, the heatsink is smaller than some of the other cards, and even some of Sapphire's older cards (My 6950 cooler was pretty beefy for how old it was) but it does it's job. For the $200ish the card is selling for around this time it's well worth the price. They would have charged way more for a better cooler than 10, because I would hope they would impliment more copper into the thing. But you're right, if their card would have cost more than the rest by a far margin, they wouldn't have sold.

Now, I think the Nitro cards are the best looking RX cards that came out, so personally I let the slightly higher temps go. Lemme put it this way, if it doesn't fry itself while running brand new games at 1080/60, the cooler is doing its job just fine lol. You can't expect a 1080 cooler to be put on to a 480. The price would be ridiculous.

The max temps for these cards is something like 90-95C (MAYBE 100C?) and VRMs are good to 120C so Idk why you guys worry (aside from overclocks). I will admit I'm a bit dissapointed that the OC headroom is so small on these cards, but I only OC'ed my 6950 because.... well it was a 6950. Would be neat af if we could flash the 470s to the 480s like the 6950-6970 unlock.

But the card is usually the same price or a few dollars cheaper than most of the competition (often with better coolers). And why would people not buy it if it had a better cooler and a bit more expensive? People are buying other brand cards too, no?
Don't get me wrong. The Nitro is a really good card. It has one of the better custom PCBs, the highest stable stock overclock, and with pro stylish looks. The cooler is adequate but they could have done better considering their previous offerings with the Nitro moniker.

Have some vendors started to put 8ghz Samsung ram on 470 4gb models?

I've got a unicorn 470 4gb card that clocks memory to 2200mhz.

Powercolor 470 4gb red devil. On stock volts the core goes to 1360. It crashes at 1375. And 1370 will complete benches but scores lower than the core at 1360.

Hwinfo memory errors start at 2230 with 1 occurring every minute or so. I've gradually increased memory 25-50 from stock clock of 1750 to ensure fps gains and no throttling or memory errors.

I saw that a new driver was released...so I broke out the card again. I ran a few benchmarks using Wattman and the new MSI Afterburner Beta.

I just made a few runs of Firestrike, and I get some odd scores.

Here is a screen shot:

The first 4 runs are at the stock settings with just the power raised to the max(+50). The last two are with the core OC'd to 1300. My score and graphics both take a big hit.

Any reason as to why?

The first one at 1300 was ran using Wattman. The second at 1300 was via AB.

Strange....to me anyway.

EDIT: Used the same settings...took the memory to 1850....lower than the last one by a little:

I'm new to this thread so not sure if people figured out what is going on. I've noticed some wired bug with afterburner too.

If you run a bench and then go to desktop and manually change clocks in afterburner the card will throttle without the actual clocks changing. You can verify by the lower score and lower power draw. Doesn't happen all the time but seldom does.

If you change the clocks with a hot key with saved profile without going to desktop then no throttle occurs.

To be honest...if you look back in the thread, it was believed that there was a driver issue applying memory overclocks incorrectly. It was a bit strange at the time. There were several other users that were having the same issue. I'm not sure if I had applied any memory OC's on those runs at all. I can look to see if they are still listed on 3Dmark if you like. There was also the issue of lowering the voltage to maintain clock speeds. AB had issues with all the new cards too. Both nVidia and AMD. Of course, Wattman was a bit new, and it was crashing....a lot!

I'm not trying to make excuses, but there were a lot of things happening when those were ran. If my memory serves me correctly, after the dust settled, I think the card would OC to around 1340. The memory issue was still present though.

I really didn't give it much attention at the time at the time, as this card was bought for my son's rig, and he won't be doing any overclocking.

I can go back and look if you like. Not a biggie really.

I may, after Christmas, be able to mess with the card some more. ATM, it's under the tree! biggrin.gif

EDIT: No memory OC's on those runs from what I can tell.

One more thing though.....I had came from overclocking GTX970's in SLI...so I was a bit of a noob on OC'ing the AMD card....lol rolleyes.gif

EDIT II: Here is what I found.....I have 44 pages of just Firestrike scores...wheee.gif I believe those were the best I could do. The one on the left is what I normally run my CPU at for all my benchmarks 4.0ghz. The one on the right is at 4.5ghz. The memory OC is also shown in the details. I think it was 1850/1875. Core clocks were the same though.
