Plus the 8gb memory is tons faster than the 4gb memory. I apologize if that wasn't your goal, but it just looks like an Nvidia slide for one of their new cards comparing two "equal" cards against each other.

Of course it would...but I don't have another card to test.... frown.gif

Being fair though....look at the 470 with the Vulkan API....it performs about at the 1060 level. I mean...I'm sure the 480 would probably see as much, if not bigger gains in Vulkan. I was quite surprised to see the 470 to gain 30fps. You can see that the 1060 lost a bit in Vulkan.

As for the Vram usage.....the max in both runs with the 470 was 3399mb. Well under the 4gb.

I didn't do this to really "compare" the cards to each other, but to see what gains/losses that both cards had from OpenGL to Vulkan.

If you would like to donate a 8gb card for me test...I'll give it back when I'm done. biggrin.gif (Joking of course)

Also...I'm just getting this benchmark down...I've only used this software for a few runs....that is why I said a "grainpinch" of salt. I will do some more testing...and it may change all of this.

I totally understand! And like I said I wasn't sure if you were comparing or just seeing the gains from the AP. My 470 8gb card hits well over 120fps (that I see) paired with my a10-6800k @4.8Ghz in DOOM, Vulkan, and all ultra settings. And what's weird is if I cap it at 60, I get weird screen tearing like I would at 30-40fps, even with Vsync turned on. So I just let my card run free pumping out the 100+Fps through my 60hz LED 40" Tv. lol.

And I definitley saw massive gains in Vulkan over OpenGL. I can't remember if I got Vulkan to run on my HD6950 or not before I got my new card. But I got massive gains with my 470. (Nitro+ OC 8Gb Samsung chips)

On a side note, I've heard the 3Gb 1060 has issues running certain games, not due to the amount of ram itself, but something with the RAM type or the tracing I can't remember off the top of my head.

IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN GIVEN THE 1060 MONIKER! Sorry for yelling..... biggrin.gif

They are not the same card really(regardless of the amount of Vram). There is a thread here on OCN that discussed this.

EDIT: OCN LINK http://www.overclock.net/t/1609109/techreport-nvidia-makes-its-gtx-1060-3gb-card-official

I am going to try a make a video to post on Youtube of the software and how I went about getting these numbers. It's actually fairly easy, but a few steps you have to take. Hopefully, I will get it up this weekend. I'll post a link if you would like to try it out on your card. It would be cool to have even more information to compare.

Edit: Oh about your Vram speed cooment ...no doubt...the 1060 is 2000mhz at stock. The 470 is 1750mhz.

Edit to Tisser12, I don't want you to think that If I post something in the red thread that is green that I'm doing it to bust someones ba^%s, I'm not really loyal to either brand. I just love doing benchmarks with anything I can my hands on. I have a R9 270x 4gb, I'll throw it in there and test it....and my gtx970. See what kind of free-for-all it might be.... smile.gif

I'm curious if anyone, or how many, has got a 480 to run 2500+ on the memory (10GHz+ combined)? I'm thinking about getting XFX's top 480 and wondering how much better it may be compared to my stock, water-cooled 290X for 4k. The 4k encoding and 8GB VRAM is enough to persuade me though...

Maybe that was the thread I had read about the 1060. So many threads... What do you expect in a 50,000 thread count egyptian cotton blend I guess.

Yeah my RAM is clocked at 2000mhz on my 470, and it makes a difference in the FPS you get in some of the newer titles I've seen from a few different benchmarks. Idk the exact difference, but it's there. Trust me, I'm an *PC tech.

The only time we see the 1060 wooping something is the minimum drop in Fps on the 470 that could indeed be caused by not enough ram for ultra but it just could have been something random that doesn't happen in a repeated reruns.

@Tisser12 and anyone else who wants to try it.

Here ya go....not the best video in the world, but I think you get the picture:

Here is the graph that it created:

This was at 1080p, and yes I realize that AA was completely off.

Again, I'm just starting to use this software, and Relive for that matter.... biggrin.gif

Oh, I know that not only did I spell the program wrong, I kept referring to as Preset Monitor too!

I put the link to the software in the description if you, or anyone else want to give it a try.

NOTE: I have found it easier that once you finish the run, you can go to the output folder(it's the actual program folder where you installed it at), and change the name to whatever you want. It makes it a little easier to identify the runs. Of course with Vulkan it will have a different tag in the filename.

True...but you are talking just about the 470 using Vulkan....the 470 gets spanked at stock in most benchmarks(not trying to start a argument). You are right about the minimum framerates though. I think it was just a fluke. I'm just messing with this software, so once I get more comfortable, we'll see if it's really a big issue.

I wasn't really trying to compare the cards to each other...it's just that's all I have access to. I could throw in my old R9 270x and my GTX 970 though. Just to see what gains/losses each has using Vulkan. That was really the point of the comparison.

To be honest....it seems like all the cards run Doom pretty well.

***Update***

I threw in the R9 270x and ran them again....OpenGL/Vulkan

While I did see a increase in FPS in Vulkan, not as extreme as the 470 got. Still, not too bad really.

OpenGL:
Min: 39.30
Max: 143.00
Avg: 61.42

Vulkan:
Min: 46.99
Max: 120.54
Avg: 72.78

I think I figured out the low minimum on the other runs.....I had died! I saw the same low min. when I ran it a couple of times and had died. At least we know it's not the Vram causing the low minimum. As you can see overall pretty good with both OpenGL and Vulkan.

The only time we see the 1060 wooping something is the minimum drop in Fps on the 470 that could indeed be caused by not enough ram for ultra but it just could have been something random that doesn't happen in a repeated reruns.

Yeah even my HD6959 ran Doom at acceptable framerates on high/ultra settings. It's a beautifully optimized game. Now if they could just stop putting out new maps for the MP and do some more campaign stuff.... That'd be greeeaaat. lol I honestly had no clue that the season pass was for all multiplayer stuff till after I already bought it. Now I know for next time to check that stuff lol I was hoping for extensions to the campaign, maybe a multiplayer campaign mode or something neat.

It seems like Doom runs better in windowed mode over fullscreen for you, is that pretty consistent between games? I've been tinkering with my settings to try and get the most out of my hardware. Figured out why I was hitting low 20's at times in BF1, I was supersampling. Like MAJORLY so. I should not tweak settings at 5 am, I've learned. haha. Still, there's something crushing my CPU that I can't adjust because it seems like no matter what I do with my settings aside from putting everything on medium or low my FPS bounce super hard from 30-60. And I've made sure NOTHING is running in the background, tried turning my little second screen off completely, and I even put my windows 7 into a "Basic theme" to cut down on any possible desktop issues. I've tried all the AA settings, TAA looks the best, obviously, but then FXAA doesn't really give me much of a boost, and looks like I have no AA running at all. *sigh* things like this are one of the few reasons I miss my xbox. But then again, my xbox never made games look/play this nice even WITH the issues I have lol.
