I am thinking of applying a thin copper layer on the base of the all aluminum sink of the reference 470. In theory, that should give better heat transfer from the chip to the base of the sink, and half a mm elevation of the sink, theoretically giving better air flow. Do you think it's worth the effort?
I'll also be replacing TIM, and I don't know if I'll do two separate measurements: new TIM only, and new TIM + copper plate, to tell if the plate is helping at all. I'm kinda lazy.. biggrin.gif It sounds like a lot of work.
What are you thoughts?

You could either return the card or talk to MSI and see if they would ship you a replacement fan. I hope they are easy to replace...or even can be replaced.

Well you would need to disassemble the cooler to replace the fan and MSI actually disapproves of this. There is even a tiny "warranty void if broken" sticker on one of the screws . I returned the the card to my retailer and asked for a replacement. I hope I won't have any issues with the next one.

Is there any AIO CPU water cooler like the ones from Cooler Master, BeQuiet and Fractal Design and others that fit and can cool a Sapphire RX480 Nitro 8GB card?

The heat-sink fastening looks darn similar to those for CPU coolers.

imagine your copper layer transfers heat so well it instantly reaches the temp of the chips. it now must transfer that heat to the aluminum... which will occur at the exact same rate as before. you're wasting your time. all-copper sinks would help a little but i doubt that would be worth the money or trouble

Thanks for the answer, just checked the RX480 and it's back plate is covered with a plate. (mixed up my MSI GTX970 which has visible mounting with the Sapphire RX480).
Will try to fit an AIO on the RX480.

Those stickers actually don't matter as far as I'm aware because many things could remove it by accident and I've never once heard of an RMA being denied because of that sticker missing. It's like the tag on a mattress it's just for show.

But the area of the copper is much larger than the area of the chip, these chips are tiny and they heat up the center of the aluminum sink more than the rest. With a copper layer, the heatsink theoretically should get even heating, or at least that's what I'm thinking smile.gif Also, the copper will be much better polished than the aluminum, so maybe better transfer from the chip...

I suppose if you already have an electric drill, you could buy a cutting disk and make the whole thing much simpler.

I see. One last thing man, could you tell me how you did the threading on the alluminum piece bottom to be able to screw the 2 screws that keep it in place?

I didn't, because I don't have a tap smile.gif It's just a hole that goes through. You can use a nut and bolt.

Um guys... I don't know if that has been discussed previously, but i get serious visual artifacts with both my Rx470s on very specific objects in at least 2 games.
Until now I thought it's either some weird DOOM thing, like design decision I don't understand, or a Vulkan issue, but Samuel Hayden in DOOM's movement was glitchy. That is the only character, the only model at all that manifested that issue. It was like his model and textures repeated themselves for a while when he moved. Like when you enable cursor "tails" in Windows and your cursor gets repeated several times when you move it. When the model is static, everything is fine. When he moves, there's this weird repeating/blurring thing.
Like I said, I thought it's either DOOM or Vulkan thing, and it didn't bother me because you don't spend much time with Hayden at all, so I ignored it.

But I just got DeusEx: Mankind Divided, and... some guard's faces do the same thing! All characters are fine and have no glitches, just this generic type guard's facial expressions blur and repeat when they talk. I turned off Surface Format Optimization as it sounds related to that, but that's not it, the issue persists.

Anybody have seen a problem like that?

EDIT: I suppose it's important to note that I have motion blur, chromatic aberration, and depth of field off in all games. I see how some of these may "mask" the effect. Can anyone please turn these off and see if Hayden moves fine in DOOM?
