Why some people with rx480 have throttling issues, i have read som RS owners with 80°+ at full load, mine with 1338mhz oc without adding voltage, and fans set to manual, it stay rock solid at 77-78° all the time, without throttling.

I bought this RX470 for my son's rig, but wanted to mess with it a bit. I am a bit addicted to benchmarking. I had run my normal benchmarks up through 16.11.4, but had put the card away for Christmas. I swapped it out with my 1060 and did some testing on Deus Ex:Mankind Divided. I'll address those benchmarks that I posted earlier.

Anyway, I spent the day catching up on all the drivers today. I added those to the spreadsheet that I had been keeping. I think there were 5 sets of drivers to do. FYI, they take about a hour per driver....not to mention trying to keep them all organized. I do have a system to do them, and it works fairly well. I also added The Division with DX12 for those 5 drivers. I don't think it was available when I ran the others.

Here ya go:

Powercolor Red Devil RX470 Benchmarks Drivers 16.8.2-17.1.2

Note:
I believe the increase in some of the CPU scores are due to swapping out my 4gbx4(1600mhz) ram with 8gbx2(1866mhz) Ram. CPU clocks are always the same 4.0ghz.

OK. On to the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided benchmark charts I posted. I decided since I was doing other drivers(those were originally on 17.1.2), I would run a different driver to see what was going on with DX11. I re-ran it using 17.1.1, and low and behold, that massive overhead was gone! I was like...hmmmmm. thinking.gif Now, when I installed 17.1.2 originally it was a clean install using DDU. When I installed 17.1.1 it was a dirty install. I went from 16.11.5 to 17.1.1.

@ronnin426850 Thought you might be interested, or have some thoughts about this.

Anyway, I did another clean install of 17.1.2....here are the results:

Frame Times: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

FPS: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Variability and Stuttering: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Comparable FPS: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Almost identical. wth.gif

I can't explain it. I know when I ran them yesterday on 17.1.2, I ran them several times to make sure. I don't believe I made any changes in the Radeon settings, or Wattman. I used MSI for all of those, and the benchmarks I did today.

EDIT: I do have a question. Why does the card keep my memory clock at 1750 when there is no load on it? It only does it when I have the refresh rate set at anything other than 60hz. I keep my monitor at 120hz. frown.gif

Power throttling, not temp throttling.

Edit: Issue has been resolved, see four posts down.

My ASUS Dual RX 480 4 GB won't even run the advertised "out of the box" speed properly. With no tweaking it only runs at 1125 MHz, despite the core clock being set to 1300 MHz. Basically it's not pulling enough power at default settings and needs a power limit increase of 35% to stabilize at 1300 MHz. However, by raising the power draw to that level the card overheats like crazy and can't make it through a Unigine or Sleeping Dogs benchmark test without climbing to 90C and throttling. I've played with fan settings and it makes no difference, even if I set the fan to stay constantly near max the whole time.

I'm about ready to return this thing but would welcome any suggestions or ideas.

Not much to suggest. These chips seem to vary A LOT in quality. Leaky chips need higher vcore, higher voltage means more power, more power means more heat... All you can do is try to keep the thing as cool as possible.

17.2.1 released. x264 corruption problem solved, finally. Let's see how it goes versus the 1060 in For Honor, as it includes optimizations for it.

Just updated the driver sheet....new driver. I had just caught them all up...lol

RX 470 Benchmarks Drivers 17.2.1-16.8.2

I made a comparison of Deus Ex again.

Last three drivers, DX11( I didn't label them): Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

17.2.1 DX11 v DX12: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I'll say the same thing about these that I say when nVidia releases a new driver....meh. biggrin.gif

With as many times as I came across undervolting discussions I never thought it would benefit me, as my card wasn't even hitting stock clock as it was without a power limit increase. Well apparently it is doing the job. I've only been playing with it for 30 minutes but right now it's running a stable 1300 MHz (stock) at 1.1V (1.15V is stock) with a 45% power limit increase. Max peak temp is about 71C, the wattage pull is around 115 average (was 130 average going up to 135 at times, keeping temps in the low to mid 80 range and eventually quickly climbing to 90 and throttling).

I have to take back everything I said as right now I couldn't be happier with the card. Well, eventually trying to push past the stock clocks of 1300 MHz core and 1750 MHz memory would certainly make me happier. Baby steps. smile.gif

I just got a MSI RX 470 but always get black screen after 5 min of gaming when I use displayport. HDMI and DVI oddly seem to work fine at least in a 30 min test. I tried multiple drivers with DDU, cables and displays. I def need DP for my main monitor. Temps are all fine. Defective card or what else could this be?

hey people, i have a question, ¿a better thermal paste does make a difference on the RX 480 temps? i am using CM ice fusion, and it gets hot really fast at 80% usage like 80ºC ¿changing the thermal paste from a Thermal Conductivity (W/m-K)= 1.0 paste (CM ice fusion rate) to a Thermal Conductivity (W/m-K)= 8.5 (ARTIC MX4 rate) can make a real difference or it isn't worth it? i will appreciate any sort of answer, thank you and good tuesday. thumb.gif
