Think changing out the thermal paste to some Gelid would be worth the warranty void and effort? I don know that only about 1/2 the ram is covered with this HSF... would have to find some slim and small ones to attach if I wanted to get those cooled a little further as well.

First order of business is always to try to improve case airflow to the card. After that, raise the lowest point of the fan curve, so fans start from say, 50% instead of 40%, or 40% instead of 30%. Having them just a bit faster early on can counter the heat buildup surprisingly well.
Only then if you're not satisfied with the results, consider voiding the warranty and changing TIM. I changed mine already, huge improvement.

Yea, since the beta they added in the utilization reading in the stats. It moves so fast it's really hard to tell. I mean, it's not at 100% 100% of the time. It still does a much better job than Valley/Heaven. On the nVidia cards it would drop way down.....the AMD cards always seemed to keep it really high. I think some of it is just from switching scenes. Try running the 4KOptimized. I'm not sure what the actual differences are between that and the 1080 Extreme, but it seems I get a little better score/FPS.

I used 1mm pads all around and it works well.

As for the rest the only thing that displays vrm temps is HWinfo

if you live in the usa taking the heatsink off and changing the paste does NOT void the warranty.. i asked MSI myself.

MSI Tech. 03/31/2017 you can do so without void the warranty when there is no physical damage to the video card

its usually the first thing i do when i get a gpu, take the heatsink off.. most of the time the paste they use is crap.. if its even applied right.. my xfx 480 the paste was off the side of the chip and not even on the die.

This is slightly misinformation

Legally yes, but they can (and will) still deny warranty claim because of it and the only way you'd be able to fight it is with a legal battle not worth your time or money.

There is nothing stopping manufacturers from denying your warranty if you mess with the product in any way. They aren't supposed to but will because nobody will stop them or really can unless the government steps in (and they won't).

Some manufacturers don't suck, if they don't deny it thats awesome, but don't bet on it because chances are you'll lose that bet.

Just for comparison. I know this benckmark is pretty new so there's not too much for comparison right now.
