Hey guys

Been reading this thread for the last 50 pages or so since i was interested in OCing my 8GB Strix RX480.

I had found a website that said 1410 was the the clock limit with 8800 on the memory but you guys have intrigued me with the ~1500Mhz threshold.

So my question is: why can i bench 1480/8800@1.3v (150 power target and 65c/50%rpm) using FurMark and 3DMark (TimeSpy) but the moment i go to play Resident Evil 7 with these settings, the game barely loads before the system fully crashes and not even BSOD? (I know it's the GPU thats the problem because if i press reset i get the 1L 3S beep code. I have to press the 'retry' button on the mobo to get it to boot again.)

Upon rebooting into windows i get the Wattman restored to default settings after unexpected system failure.

Any suggestions for what it could be or what i could look out for would be great. smile.gif

you may have an OC that's bench stable but games are different and more dynamic. Your OC just isn't stable id either increase voltage (which at 1.3v id say nah) or back off the clocks till youre game stable. Benchmarks and stress tests provide a consistent load that's predictable and easy to deal with. My 470 can bench at 1175mv 1400mhz but crashes instantly in any game and I cant push the voltage high enough to stabilize it without black screening so I'm stuck with 1350mhz which I can do at stock voltage with just a +50 power limit.

Every card is different, mine OC decently without a voltage increase but beyond that I need to pump so much voltage into it its not worth the effort. Just have to find your limit.

I am wondering if a 480 block will swap over to the 580 now. thinking.gif

But honestly, unless I see a good price on 580, I will stick it out with the 480 I got last month. tongue.gif

Ok thanks for the quick reply. So you reckon it's more than likely that the card simply can't handle 1480 @1.3v? I thought that TimeSpy with its two different graphics tests would have been sufficient enough to try and find any weakness but it seems its just more about point scoring.

I do have all the settings fully maxed out at 1050p on Resi 7 and it plays nearly 60fps fine at standard Strix OC settings but I just wrongly assumed that between these two stress testers that one of them would have been able to give me settings i can use for gaming.

I have HWiNFO and have logged one of the times that it crashed. Do we know the upper limits in terms of power draw for this card? wattages, amperages, voltages etc? I can look to see where or why specifically it crashed possibly?

youre not likely crashing due to power draw, just simply cant run 1480 stable at those voltages in games. You always stress test with like heaven or something then move on to game testing to check stability because stress tests aren't enough and don't present the same load a game will.

That card itself can take plenty of voltage, the question is how much can your specific 480 chip and how much would you need to be stable/is it worth it even?

Was thinking the same thing but mine is an 8gb XFX OC card and I am not sure thereally is much left in the way of headroom. biggrin.gif

But that's why I put a block on it for better cooling. Should be able to push it a 100 or so over stock clocks. thumb.gif

Like post above said, wouldn't bother with that either.

I'm waiting for Vega no reason to bother with just a higher clocked Polaris if you already have Polaris
