It's expensive. Always. Trying to cheap out (not saying you are) leads to problems and people not learning the right way to do things.

Always buy the best parts you can afford or don't buy anything. IMO.

Stahp. People buying mid range stuff are financing the research for your "best parts available".

I am not trying to cheap out. I want to get the best for the money i have set aside for my hobby that are currently 450eu
That said i was planning for RX 480 8GB so that it can have headroom for a monitor upgrade from 1050p that i am running right now to a freesync 1440 later on. + 8GB making it last a bit longer before i replace it.

Getting a 1070 now will be a waste because i won't use it's full power
Getting a 480 8GB might also be a little overdoing it for 1050p but won't be as much wasted
Getting a 470 4GB would be ideal but it's life will be a bit shorter.

The price difference however is huge i am looking at something like 35% higher price from 470 4G to 480 8G and if it is only 10% gain it doesn't seem justified.

The money left over will still remain set aside for the hobby biggrin.gif ... so will result in shortening the next upgrade stage smile.gif

RX 470 will not present a significantly different lifespan than a RX 480, even comparing 4 vs 8gb of VRAM. Perhaps 8gb could win out in the long run if you go for CF, but CF is kinda falling by the wayside.

Its your opinion, sure, but you talk about it like its a law. Why should somebody playing games at 1080p or lower buy a GTX 1070 or above?

RX480/470 are so close it doesn't matter, if you can get a 470 for a good price then go for it

I am split in 4 right now

So retailers charge a lot more for the 8 GB versions and i know it's faster but how much does that rly change performance.

the Sapphire Nitro versions are 1750 on the 4 GB and 2000 on the 8 GB regardless of RX 470 or 480 would that make the 4GB 480 a better option that the 8 GB 470 considering the 2-nd is priced higher biggrin.gif

What would the difference in performance be given same Core clocks and stock ram clocks

I was planning to wait for the MSI 480 8GB that has 6+2 VRM so they can have lower temps and have a quiet and more durable overall card but if it comes at 330eu it will be quite pointless to not get a 4 GB RX 470 Nitro for 230 eu instead.

The price / performance difference is huge

Yeah the pricing is insane because P10 chips are scarce and demand was high from miners so what ever cards make it to retailers it's 10s not 100s nor the necessary 1000s. So they pretty much charge what the heck they want because there are still some people or miners who don't care and buy the overpriced cards, slowly but they do.
Some retailers pull together in an oligopoly and adjust prices together withing the hour day at most to the same price, one raises the other follow. Lack of competition between retailers and lack of supply.

Yet reference cards are in stock here and there so miners should be done buying by now. Problem is there has to be enough supply for prices to settle down and even then i don't see them dropping too fast.

I can't estimate how much should i wait before the 480's drop to what they should be frown.gif

I did some testing with a killawatt. idle for my system with the rx480 on stock settings is ~104watt.

GPU idle temp on stock is 24 Celsius

Water temp as measured by inferred sensor at 25.6. That's 1.6 degrees off from gpu sensor. So there is a +- 1.6 degree variance on the infrared temp gun compared to gpu sensor.

GPU VRM idle at 32 Celsius.

Heaven is 262 watt high measurement for total system power.

Load gpu high temp measure is 41 Celsius. At the time of measuring the back of the card it was 38, the back of the gpu on the card was 42.5

VRM sensor reads 53. temp gun for back of VRMs read 50.

This is after about 25 min.

For the overclock settings I did 1435 1.233v 2205 on memory. (oddly when I added an extension cord to separate the computer onto a different outlet for the killawatt, I started getting memory errors at 2210 so I had to drop to 2205 for error free operation. Odd like I said.) I ran heaven longer. about 2 hours.

Idle System Power RX480 overclocked 110 watt max.

gpu temp idle
25 Celsius

gpu vrm idle temp
33 Celsius

Heaven is 356 watt max of measured system power.

24pin is 2.5 degrees over ambient after one hour.

gpu high temp is 51, 47 at the time of measuring back of card. 54 at back of card

vrm is at 69 Celsius. back of card was 64 Celsius.

So my overclock adds 94 watts to the video card power draw. If we assume the video card is at about 155 to 160 watt on stock, that puts the video card at about 249 to 254 watt under load. GPUz shows momentary spikes that are higher than that, but the average is much lower for GPU only power draw than what killawatt is suggesting.

I haven't done power draw for 3dmark yet. Maybe this weekend. Big day tomorrow. We're doing a test run with dad bringing him home from the hospital for the first time in over 5 months. Monday is the go day for bringing him home.

I'm sure redoing the block and thermal pads will take care of my vrm temps. Passive cooling on the back of the card is looking like a good option. The back of the card is consistently hotter than the gpu temp sensor.

Okay, so my XFX RX 480 8GB GTR has arrived, and I've done some testing in the last two hours I've had it biggrin.gifrolleyes.gif

While I have a lot of performance numbers to compare between the RX 470, RX 480, and R9 290, this post is just going to focus on power draw... because I knew from the start my RX 470 (Sapphire Nitro+ 4GB) was drawing way too much power.

Stock voltages:

Undervolted:

(that RX 480 jump from 1050 to 1100Mhz was because it required quite a bit more voltage to maintain stability, but it didn't need any more until after 1275Mhz).

These wattages are all full system usage above idle.
