My problem is that I play at 1440p, not at 1080p like my friend. 175€ is a good price if they offer me the 40€ discount but the bandwith and the VRAM.... What do you think?

Don't think you will have a problem with the Vram at 1440p - The for example DX 12 optimization for that its good, and in the real world the differece between "Ultra" and "High" textures, the only thing who affect the Vram - Its not significant in my opinion.-

But Polaris is bandwith starved and I will get the 7Ghz memory, so I will take a hit in performance :/

Forget that point - But i remember test a few games with my RX 480 at 7 ghz and dont have a problem - Check youtube I see a lot of comparations with 480 of 4 gb and 8 gb - Yours its a 470 but have the same memory speed and there's not noticiable difference in performance.-
post #874 of 4340
I wanted to sum these differences but didn't get to raw numbers yet. From what I remember from reviews I would put it in this order of magnitude:

  1. 470 vs 480, 480 vs 1060 (6GB), 10%
  2. GPU clock difference, such as throttling vs stock, stock vs OC, 5-10%
  3. 4GB vs 8GB because of speed 6-7 vs 8GHz, 5%

Better clocked memory helps and that's IMHO the difference, by itself the VRAM size is insignificant but the speed is what makes the performance difference and why I dislike those 4GB Hynix versions. They are cheaping out on the VRAM to increase profit and to make a bigger difference between 4 and 8GB model in performance.

IMHO there should have been only 2 versions:
480 8GB, Samsung, 8GHz+
470 4GB, don't care, 7GHz+

This would make it so much easier for AIBs to market their products and not confuse customers but also themselves and their distributors when it comes to pricing.

Just like NV shouldn't have made 1060 3GB but instead cut a little more and make 1050 3GB of it. Why do all 1060s have 8 VRAM slots with 2 VRAM chips missing is freakin' beyond me, reference and custom boards, all of them, 8 slots, what's up with that nonsense? Everyone too lazy to change their template from 256bit to 192bit when designing the PCB?

When you sum all the differences up you get a crappy 470 with slow vram and throttling vs 480 with fast vram and no throttling, it's gonna be a noticeable difference.

I think early deals are already gone. Here in germany RX 480 4GB was sold close to MSRP for 219€ while the 8GB version was 269€ from the start with good availability. Mining is probably less a thing here because of electricity costs. But the price of 8GB reference cards is rising and availability is going down. Perhaps the 8GB reference models will also disappear soon.

I also think, that having 8GB is an advantage. They are not technically neccessary, but games are often implemented/ported poorly. And higher texture quality does not really cost performance. So paying for VRAM is aiming at image quality and not fps.

Only 2 versions would be an disadvantage for AIBs, because consumers would be better informed. On average the 'confused' customer is probably paying more.

Hey !

I just got a RX 480 Nitro + OC 2 days ago and i have several issues since.
I would have know if some of you experienced these too :

  1. Black screen desktop
  2. GPU load 100% IDLE
  3. Flickering desktop FreeSync

Thanks !

I don't know how long they want to continue selling them but to many markets those cards were never actually shipped in any decent quantity frown.gif
I would have grabbed it maybe for the price it finally fell down to. Now the rare 480 4GB Nitro is the best deal around here IMHO.

Unfortunately only CaseKing offers decent shipping for me, MindFactory maybe ships but that's +30 EUR a packet + 1.9% for payment and I hope that is including shipping in that +30. CK is 279-289 EUR, where as MF is 269-279 EUR for 480 8GB reference cards. At least some shops show dates when they expect stock. Many shops don't bother to show or even reply to inquiries.

290 EUR from CK for a reference card, hell no when I can order a custom card for around the same locally. We had the reference down to 263 EUR which was a nice deal finally and close to what MF offers the 269 EUR.

---

kaneos: Yeah I've seen those bugs around frown.gif
Look around people reported them with cards, maybe the Nitros as well.

Usually driver's problem - do a DDU and install the last driver again.-

A Tweak to take in mind

Today I start to play and check my Clock Speed and was at stock speed and say... "Man... come on I finish to set up this, and today another thing change?" First go like a devil to attack Wattman and was OK rolleyes.gif
So... restart PC and put the overclock again, play, then go to internet use chrome all that stuff, open the game again and... stock clocks mad.gif

Well, the problem was this brains of Asus in GPU Tweak II put by default enable the "Keyboard Shortcut" and more intelligent was they use ALT GR + 2 in my lenguage keyboard that's arroba @ so every time I press @ the overclock go to hell - So change it or desactive from GPU Tweak II settings.- biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

I ordered from alternate. They had the 4GB reference models for 219€, answered my questions and delivered within 2 days (initial estimate was two weeks). Even without the memory upgrade this was a fair price. So, early deals were the best/only deals. GTX 1060 6GB is now cheaper than RX 480 8GB. And GTX 1060 3GB (available for 219€) beats RX 480 4GB at 249€. Prices have to come down for AMD.

Got my 480 today. Will test it in ETH mining on Saturday. Planning to keep either my Nano or the 480.
