I have zero issues with timings on my 4gb 470. I get linear gains from increasing the memory clocks up to ~1925. After that I start running into memory errors and inconsistent frame rates.

Your experience with NewEgg intrigues me. I've dealt with them for many years and have had no issues with any fees to return a product - and that includes shipping.

I think they are trying to return for a refund without claiming the card is defective.

No, I posted a few runs with the memory OC'd in Valley a few pages back. No errors. I did the return request online, so it will be tomorrow before I know for sure. Like I said, I'll probably put it back in my rig, and do some more testing.

Here is a spreadsheet that I started a few days ago of the R9 and the GTX 970. The numbers at stock look pretty decent against the 970 actually.

I use Haven/Valley to find the point where the card just starts throttling and use that point as p-state 7. Then I step down 50-100mhz from that to make the curve smooth and set appropriate voltages. Ends up something like [1300, 1250, 1200, 1150, 1050, 900].

Getting the voltages right for each step is crucial to prevent things like FireFox/Chrome from crashing the PC.

Can you take a screen shot of your Wattman settings so I can take a look?

Valley and Heaven both ran fine with the card undervolted to 1090, but it would crash in Firestrike/Time Spy, even BF4 on a the test range. The ASIC is horrible too...67.5.

Im not where my rig is ATM. With that ASIC quality you likely need 1100mv for 1266. Mine is ~82% and needs 1100mv for 1300.

I did set it to that, and it was semi-stable. It was still throttling during the first graphic test on Firestrike/Time Spy.

I'll mess with it some more tomorrow. I've already got my rock solid stable 970 back in there now. Just when you get a chance to take a screen shot will be good. I'm in no hurry. I think I've settled down a bit, and ready to try again...lol biggrin.gif

Thanks for the help though. thumb.gif

EDIT: Well getting ready to mess with it some more....I think...lol

I just updated the spreadsheet of the 3 cards.(Added The Division to the R9 and 970)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_9OvCU-lejR5z3A864Obgh8DPYaP5aHlKsmS2Mo1oWI/edit?usp=sharing

Quick question if anyone is around. I'm on the Crimson driver now. Do I need to use DDU and act like I'm going to install a new card? or can I just slap the RX 470 in there? The R9 is in there right now.

His screen shots showed 0 memory errors at 1850 and 1800 but much lower performance. VRMs were low on temp and so was gpu. It's not thermal throttle. Could be a bad module like you said, I think ecc in gddr5 only detects 1 and 2 bit errors. But 0 errors in the screenshot threw me. Obviously something isn't stable. Not sure what.

edit: Firestrike ultra will change p-states a lot even with a modded plus 100 power limit rather than plus 50. Timespy doesn't throttle for me. Post a pic of your wattman settings when you get a chance. Maybe that will give us some clues.

Probably a OE(operator error)....lol biggrin.gif

I will admit I am a bit lost...or should I say confused about Wattman. I going to put the card back in a bit, I just needed to settle down and gather my thoughts.

Wattman:

HWiNFO and GPU-Z(Firestrike):

I tried adding power...but it sets it back to 0(100%) when I try to apply it.

I'm still working on it though. It did throttle during graphic test one....about like it was before. Graphic test 2 seemed to throttle between like 1266 and 1270. The combined test it stay constant at 1270. No memory errors though, and temps are good.

EDIT: I reset the global settings, restarted and now the clocks are at their peaks. I have nothing graphic running. I looked in Task Manager, nothing out of the ordinary running.

Do me a favor. I think I know what's going on - it's a driver thing, if I'm right.

Set your memory clocks all of the way to max. Max out your voltage and just run 1Ghz flat on the core.

If you don't get memory errors, then you are experiencing what I experience with the 16.8.x drivers (the only drivers that work with RX 470, ATM): the memory clocks are not being respected, and the timing is being set improperly for any non-stock value.

I've tried to work around it with Trixx, but to no avail (I actually upgraded to 16.8.2 again to test with my RX 480 - same problem).

Still, you should have stability at stock settings. If you do return it, make sure you mark it as defective - because a card not stable at stock settings is, by definition, defective.

Also, realize that the crash in Wattman is not a driver crash. A driver crash is a drastic event that is denoted by the screen going to a full color, such as black, then resetting - this event usually kills any 3D applications that are running.

One final note: if you're running FRAPs, that could easily be a large part of your problem. It acts up on me all the time (though I keep it running anyway.. because I'm stubborn).

Is that what you mean?:

Firestrike w/GPU-Z:

BTW I'm not running FRAPS. I have it, but not quite ready for that. Although I did do a run of The Division with frame times earlier:
