Question: to maximize read/write HyperX card or not?

I've got a new Maximus VIII Gene.

I've got the OS installed on an M.2 Samsung SM951 128GB. I'm attaching my scores. I can't find an answer to my question anywhere (google, the Asus Manual, Asus Tech support, ROG forums, etc.).

Question: for this motherboard, to maximize the bandwidth of this card, do I need to get the Asus HyperX card to run it thru PCIe x_4, or does the M.2 slot on this board run at those speeds, or does the M.2 slot run at SATA speeds?

I can't find any documentation to detail at what speed the M.2 on the Maximus VIII Gene runs at. ... mad.gif

From the main product page of your motherboard
https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-GENE/

M.2 Socket 3 Type M
PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 mode
SATA mode

So it looks like it can operate at PCIe Gen 3.0x4 or SATA mode, depending on what you need. I guess if you are maxxing out your PCIe lanes with graphics cards and other add-on cards, you may want to drop your m.2 to sata mode so you can free up x4 PCIe.

@spinFX You'd think it would be so straightforward. However, there are no settings in the BIOS to slow or speed up the M.2 port. However, you can enable the BIOS to detect a HyperX Card and then force the PCIe X_4 slot to be locked to run at X_4 speed. I just wish there was a way to know for sure.
