[Help Request] Sound Card/AMP Upgrade

As I am in the process of getting new headphones, I also started looking into potential upgrades when it comes to sound cards/amps.

My budget would be around 1k €.
When it comes to music it's foremost R&B and Hip Hop, however music is more of an afterthought.

I clearly prioritize gaming and to be more specific competitive fps.

The headphone I bought (and should receive the coming days) are the AKG K7XX.
Currently I run the SB ZXR - am a bit uncertain if it's amp is sufficent to run the AKG's properly as I read quite often that AKG's by and large are rather demanding.

Another reason I looked into replacement options for my ZXR has been that I read in some forums the ACM reduces the sound quality and it does make the card's amp not work - so I am super uncertain if/how well it will work with the 7XX cans.

For that reason I looked into dedicated amps and would be able to get a Magni 2 or Fiio E10.
Then again I would like to keep the option of some sort of surround sound, the way Creative's SBX offers.

I also looked at the Asus Essence line as well as the SB X7 (limited) but am not certain if/how much of an upgrade to the ZXR those would actually be.

Would love to get some feedback from you for me not only to waste money for little to no extra value.

Well, I think some more ground rules may be needed here, but I will start by saying I am ignorant of the AKGs ability to use your ZXR. However, my rule of thumb is always to try what you have first, then worry about buying new toys.

That said, I think the common thought processes is a sound card is not as good as simply getting a DAC and Amp (or DAC/AMP combo). There's plenty of options there for mixing the two...

But still, I'd hold on this question till your AGK arrives and you plug it in. Worst case scenario is it doesn't work well and you have to wait a few more days for the DAC & AMP to arrive. I can't see much point in buying a new soundcard, but others may have different opinions there.

Since gaming is your priority, can't you just ditch the ACM and plug the K7xx into the back of the sound card? I'm sure that will be sufficient, the K7xx isn't THAT hard to drive (former owner of one here). Plus the ZxR is a good DAC and has good features for gaming, so I'd want to hold onto it.

For convenience purpose I used the ACM so far (connected in parallel my headphone and some basic stereo speakers). Will probably try both once the AKG's arrive - connecting them directly as well as via the ACM to see if there is noticeable difference.

So it seems keeping the ZxR but not to upgrade to the X7 an Assus Essence version or a dedicated AMP from the get go is the preferred route.
