First, I would upgrade the GPU, a 970 for 1440P is not going to cut it (Battlefield 1). Second would be the CPU, third the RAM (not necessarily capacity but frequency).

At first I would wait for Battlefield 1 to release, then judging by the released benchmarks plan the GPU upgrade. If you have money to spend, The CPU and the RAM are something that can be upgraded now. The thing with the GPUs is that some are yet to be released sometime in the coming months, so at a later date there could be better alternatives than currently.

I agree. Upgrading both GPU and CPU would be ideal but if I had to pick one I would go with the GPU for sure.
If you can swing it I would grab a 1070 / 1080, as it is a solid upgrade from a 970 or a cheap 980 Ti.

Waiting wouldn't hurt, this would allow the 10 series stock to catch up and prices will likely drop all around.

GPU need to be upgraded to a 1070 first, no other upgrade is as mandatory as this one.

next upgrade I would consider(not necessary) is a good clocking i7 3770K on OCN or ebay, they can be had for around 200 and enables PCIE 3.0 on your Gen3 board. Ivy bridge also have better IMC which opens up the option to upgrade to higher frequency DDR3 Ram which can also be had used at a good discount either on OCN market place or ebay.

Pretty good rig right now, but like everyone else I'd go with a Pascal GPU.
