6700k temps problem/question

Hi there,

I just upgraded to 6700k + ASUS Sabertooth Z170 + NH-D15 and using CLU.

So in terms of overclocking I think I got a relatively good sample and I manage stable:

4.5 - 1.230
4.6 - 1.290
4.7 - 1.310

That's Vcore in BIOS, with LLC it gets somewhat higher under full load. Now, the thing is I think my temps are too high relative to others. I see 63-67 C at 4.5 at 1.230 (1.248 with LLC) and at 4.7 at 1.310 (1.344 LLC) some core exceed 80's consistently. On the other hand I see people at 1.325 staying in the 60's range. I tried re-applying CLU twice and it's not the first time I do it so I'm not putting too little or too much. Last time I also applied a layer on the heatsink as well just to be sure. At idle my temps go down to around 25C pretty much instantly but it looks like under load the cooler is unable to cope. Fans (dual fan config) do crank up to 100%.

Are my temps normal (I know every chip is different, but still)... and if not any tips? Next I think I'd give it a try with Noctua's compound to see if this makes a difference... Thanks.

Considered delidding but 6700k looks so fragile that I'm scared to do it ;-)

For load testing I'm using Prime95 26.6 (no AVX/AVX2)

Currently I'm meeting with the same problem with my 6700k. I wanted to write my own topic with that problem, but saw your here.

I've NZXT Kraken X61 water cooling and at 4,4Ghz and ~1,36 Vcore I'm achieving over 80C... I tried to change my thermal paste (from Kraken stock to MX-2) but the problem remains. You are not alone :/

I tried to update UEFI (few days ago new version appeared for ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING). The only change is that, I can't see Vcore on other voltages on HWMonitor now under MOBO section.

Is this caused by bad, old thermal paste on heatspreader? Should I delid it? I've no idea what's going wrong. Idle temps are fine.



PS. I had similar problem with heatspreader on my GTX 570 years ago. After removing it temps went down from 110->55C during stress. Maybe it's the solution here too.

That's a lot of voltage for 4.4Ghz... do you need it to be stable?

Try CPU-Z it reports accurate actual Core Voltage

I'm afraid the only answer is "delid' but let's see what the gurus say ;-)

Yeah, I tried to lower it. Via manual mode, offset mode, adaptive mode (last two with SVID support enabled/disabled),a lso tried with custom levels on LLC - 1,3,5,7... Nothing worked. I've no idea how to decrease it. To be honest, when I set 1.25V my system didn't boot (BSOD during loading).

During benchmarking my Vcore is a bit too high, but still no as high as temps which I'm receiving. People here have 1.4 VCore with lower temps...

It sounds like the TIM between the IHS and the chip is not that great. If you really want to get those higher clocks, unfortunately you're probably going to have to delid :/ *carefully* delid I should say

I heard about that and it looks awesome. Unfortunately I didn't see it avaible in Europe (also costs would kill my budget).

What is interesting I checked few moments ago liquid temps in Kraken program (called CAM) and while processor had 81C, the liquid had...... 32C. According to all indications it seriously looks it's
petrified TIM problem...

The vendor probably doesn't recognize this under warranty, without removing that I'd kill my processor, but after delid I'll loose warranty. What an Intel's piece of...

OK, after looking for 5 minutes at a razor blade and at my delidded 3770k which I chipped the die of and lost PCI-E Slot 1 I decided to spend some cash and ordered this baby:

Hey you're not alone. My recently finished 6700k build also run very warm. At 4.8ghz with 1.355v in UEFI (1.36 constant in windows), My cores 1 and 2 will shoot up to 81C after about 30min of aida64 (CPU, FPU, and Cache) stability test. However mine isn't consistently staying there, only for about a second and it will drop back down to 58-63C 95% of the 30min. I'm using a Corsair H100i V2 AIO cooler, reseated with Gelid GC-Extreme thermal paste. The stock thermal paste of the h100i has a max temp of 85C with this voltage.

My delid tool arrived on Friday, but I didn't have time to delid until today. So.

1. First of all the tool I got me delidded safely in about 10 seconds tops. I'd never go back to a razor - not recommending the tool I got specifically, there are a lot of these out there and they all work by essentially partially rotating the IHS while applying equal pressure. Nothing is 100% safe, but this is as safe as it gets!

2. Adhesive properly cleaned (credit card for CPU, razor/credit card for the IHS), isopropyl alcohol used to clean the die, the IHS and the heatsink. Applied CLU between die and IHS and between IHS and cooler (NH-D15).

3. And results: After testing I got a total average TMax decrease across all cores of a whopping 16C at the same Ghz/voltage!!

Average TMax Before: 75.25 C
Average TMax After: 59.25 C




Note 1: TMax is being calculated by adding all max temps as reported by CoreTemp and dividing by 4.
Note 2: For this test I was using Prime 28.9 with AVX2 for max (unrealistic) load/temps.

My CPU fans don't even ramp up to 100% now. Perhaps I got a a really bad CPU in terms of stock TIM application, but this is such a huge difference that I'm just shocked. So delid away guys, just stay away from the razor and stay safe ;-)

Off to see how far she goes now. Cheers.

Have fun benchmarking and seeing how far you can push that thing! Just a warning/suggestion though - CLU hardens over time, it's better than CLP, but it still happens. If you ever want to take off that cooler for use with a different CPU or otherwise, you might want to use a more standard TIM between the cooler and the IHS. I recommend MX-4, because it is very easy to spread right and gives great temperatures.

You're making me want to delid my 4790k, although I wouldn't see anywhere near the same temperature drop.

Wow impressive improvement. I will have to delid mine eventually.

Maybe. I wouldn't try it without spacers, especially with my 5 ton cooler, but it should be OK for those on water.

Anyway, seems my CPU ain't that great after all - hit a wall - 4.8 Ghz at 1.44 V so I'm down to 4.6 now. Probably not worth the money for the extra 100-200 Mhz, but at least I'm not heat limited anymore and my rig is strangely quiet... oh, and the geek in me finally shut up ;-)

4.8ghz at 1.44V isn't bad at all. Though I can't say anything since mine does 4.8ghz at 1.36V xD
