Why is there such a difference in doom Framerate with vulcan and only 12% with async in DX12?

Graphics Score
6 801
CPU Score
9 620

Still tiny OC's 1283/1800 780 Ti 2x SLI and 5960x @4.4Ghz Standard Run 1440p but this time not running through teamviewer. I will do some higher OC results tonight hopefully. I can easily do 1400/1900 for benching with these so I'm curious how high it will go for a 2 gen old setup. Looks like I'm not that far behind single 1080's that some have been posted so far. Pretty amazing to me.

Politics.

I kid. I think. But different engines, different goals. id was going for raw framerates, clearly, while Futuremark is trying to throw as many engine features out there they can. In a game you balance them out, in a bench not so much, but I do wonder how much Futuremark is driven by vendor pressure to keep the playing field level, or lose status (and therefore $$$) as a standard benchmark.

I mean, let's be honest here: if TimeSpy went HEAVY on the compute, the numbers would come out differently. That would tip the balance and make the dominant vendor more than a little peeved at them.

Which is why benchmarks should always be open-source, to guarantee neutrality and expose all vendor paths. I did think that vendor paths were impossible in DX12, but I no longer believe that's true-- well, that's obvious if a game can say "Async Compute is disabled for XXX".

Games aren't written in a static world. You don't check the Async box for x % improvement just like you don't check the depth of field box for x % of frametime.

What Vulkan showed is that AMD's OGL driver is particularly awful. This has been well documented over the years and if I was an AMD user I'd be extremely happy the world's moving on from it because for whatever reason AMD's driver team has struggled there for a long time.

Thanks. So at least under DX11 a 980 Ti @ 1500/8000 is equal to 1070 @ 2088/9316. Good info. thumb.gif

No doubt the thing is still a beast. I just wish that Pascal had some way other then physical mods to pump a bit more voltage in.

If someone figures out a bios hack of some kind I think you'll see even better Pascal scores.

Kind of miss the days of fermi where you had an honest to god voltage slider in afterburner and they just let you do whatever you liked with it. Not huge on the boost stuff Nvidia's been pushing since Kepler.

yeah a 980 Ti at 1500+ Mhz is still a beast . Even a GTX 1080 at 2100 Mhz will probably be around 20-25% faster. So the upgrade path for 980 Ti owners is a GP102 or big Vega (since AMD has 2 Vega chips). thumb.gif
