Honestly these days I much prefer trial by fire. I mean I still use 3DMark to assess basic stability, but nothing beats a good few hours of playing a demanding game.

3DMark (or any benchmark) is useful for comparing cards but it isn't a representation of real world game performance. IMO the only way to measure real world game performance is to get the card and play games because other users gaming performance isn't any more useful than a benchmark, too many variables.

Borderlands 2 or the Pre-Sequel seem to always to be what finds my gpu clock instability. Weird since the games aren't that intensive.

There's a certain area in Borderlands 2 that pushes PhysX so hard the GPU inevitably breaks within 10 minutes if there's any instability. For the longest time I was wondering why I kept crashing in that particular area but nowhere else, and when I did crash, it was almost always the same few spots.
