Brute force performance doesn't last long, gcn vs 3 other nv architectures are a perfect example of that. because over time the way you program things change and that requires more feature set. which nvidia lacks/fakes.

Well... when you consider that you program Multi-Adapter the same way you program for Asynchronous Compute + Graphics under DX12 then you can pretty much conclude that Time Spy only makes a concurrent usage of Asynchronous Compute not a parallel usage. A few things worth considering...




The difference is pretty staggering between the Time Fly Demo and the games currently out. The games pretty much execute Asynchronous Compute tasks in parallel while Time Fly executes them concurrently. It is thus not the same Asynchronous Compute. Concurrent execution simply fill up gaps in the pipeline whereas parallel executions cut down the execution times of parallel running tasks. When executing in parallel... you can execute both a compute and a graphics task at the same time but with a synchronization point between the two. If Time Fly where using this method then we would see a performance loss for Maxwell GPUs... and we do not see that. Why a performance loss? Because the synchronization requires a flush (which takes time on Maxwell but which was improved on Pascal).

It is discussed in nVIDIAs GTX 1080 whitepaper here...


So instead... what we have are concurrent executions which do not cause this issue with Maxwell as Graphics and Compute tasks are not synchronized. You also avert a flush because you are not using any sync points. This is why the Maxwell series do not suffer a performance loss under the Time fly Demo when running Async compute.

So yeah... 3DMark Time fly is not the same Asynchronous Compute used in all of the games out currently. thumb.gif It could however indicate the type of Async compute that Bethesda will be implementing into Doom for nVIDIA hardware.

You might want to read latest 3D mark technical guide which is quite detailed on Time Spy before jumping to a conclusion. I don't think you can "force" Async to work in a way of "cocurrent executions" instead of parallel on programming level, since it is Nvidia's alternative way of dealing with Async, so i think it would happen between OS DX12 n driver and Nvidia Hardware, instead of on programming level.
I think limitation lies other than Async on explaining why it scores higher on 1070/1080 than others considerably. Since it doesn't change the fact tha AMD hardware gains more on Async than Nvidia Pascal and almost none at all on Maxwell.

Exactly. I have no issue admitting that I'm philosophically biased towards AMD but my purchases are always based on a complex tiered scale of curiosities, concerns, and pure whimsy which only makes sense to me. And that's what people should do, get what will serve their needs and tick their particular boxes, whatever they may be. If Intel or Nvidia has something I want or need, I'll buy it, even as I mutter under my breath about hoping that JHH enjoys the new custom racing jacket or what have you.

Look like Time Spy is alot more demanding than Firestrike,


At 1440p, time spy actually give similar Firestrike Ultra scores which is rendered at 4K.

Curious behavior in my scores. I have benched my 390X on Time Spy now with stock speeds on my 8320E 3.2GHz (no turbo) and with a 4.1GHz OC (all cores locked no turbo). My CPU bench scores drop dramaticly, but I get near identical scores (1 point apart) on my GPU?

As some have pointed out...the lack of CPU activity or stresses during the GPU testing may be allowing even my poorly clocked CPU to keep up with GPU demand.

This behavior would not translate well to games that have significant CPU loads. In those games the CPU would not have as many resources to keep the GPU fed properly and you would see a performance hit.

I would expect to see lower GPU scores due to bottlenecking on my sub optimal clock. I do not.

Just reinforces that this is a tool for measuring some things but it may not be a great tool for apples to oranges comparisons. In other words...a high score here...likely will not translate to high scores everywhere.
