Will SSDs eventually outstrip HDDs in capacity?

From a purely technical perspective - ignoring $/GB - it seems the SSD makers are packing more NAND into a drive at a much faster rate than the HDD makers are increasing platter density...

welcome to the world of technologyyyyyyyY! they will, the size will go smaller... and smaller... and smaller.... and capacity will keep going more and more and more, XPoint from Micron and Intel, its just going to get more amazing by the day

I think this is a great read:

SSDs may have already beaten HDDs in capacity. Last I read, Samsung had announced a 16TB SSD; the largest HDD I saw being announced was for 10TB. Of course, cost per TB for each is a whole 'nother story.

Isn't the biggest limitation to HDD's is the entire physical process. In order to go larger won't they need to increase housing size?

But you can now get a 256GB MicroSD card, or a 16TB SSD. (If you have lots and lots of money).

3.5" HDDs have gone from 20 MB in the late 1980s to 6+ TB today, while keeping the same physical form factor and dimensions the whole time. Increasing housing size has never been and will never be an option.

Actually, some in 2.5" housings have gotten as thick as 15mm. 7 and 9mm are the more common sizes.

Which is why I said 3.5" specifically.

Then again, the 2.5" situation isn't directly comparable - AFAIK, 9.5mm was the original height, 7mm was introduced about a decade ago in the quest for ever slimmer laptops, and the 15mm drives are and always have been meant for use in rack servers and will not physically fit in a standard laptop drive bay. So it's more like 3 separate form factors targeting 3 different markets/categories of devices rather than a single size that's gotten thicker for the sake of increasing capacity.

I have no idea why I posted that. Talk about senioritis.
