Lost the silicon lottery (i7-6700k) but loving the OC adventure

First PC I've built in over ten years and I lost the silicon lottery so far.

i7-6700k, Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 5, G.Skill Ripjaws 2400, Corsair H90 AIO

Started the overclocking journey pretty conservatively and was able to get a 44 multiplier with default memory profile @1.320v stable in Prime95 blended.

So far trying to get stable 45 multiplier I'm up to 1.360 and failing 2-3 workers on Prime95 within the first 15 minutes. vcore jump from 44 to 45 should be ~.050v, so I'm hoping I don't have to go too much higher. Temps are decent...peaking at 75C.

Not disappointed with my janky chip by any means. It's been fun learning the process and reading all the great info out there and here on overclock.

I think you can still get your volts up, so doesn't mean you've lost anything wink.gif Also, don't use PRIME, use AIDA64 or something like that, prime can really kill a cpu.

Yeah, I still have some room, but 4.5 is probably gonna be the most comfortable I'll be for day to day at this point.

You didn't lose the silicon lottery. You are just putting too much and unnecessary stress on the CPU by using Prime95, most people don't use it anymore.
Most of those OCs you see on OCN will probably fail the new AVX2 intensive P95 28.9.
I suggest OCCT or RealBench. But I prefer OCCT Large Data and Small Data Sets each 8 hours at least. if your CPU passed you are good to go. I also don't recommend the Aida64 CPU test because it doesn't stress test the CPU enough.

You should be able to get a little higher than that. Maybe 4,6 or 4,7GHz. Upping the voltage up to 1,4V is fine, as long as your temps don't go over 85°C.

I'd use the Custom x264 test that was made for CPU stress testing. You can find the link on the Skylake overclocking guide but I already shared the link here. Its definitely better than Prime95 in terms of temperatures but better than Aida64 in terms of stress testing.

Don't be surprised if you have to add Vcore to maintain stability. Once you get to 4.5 GHz stable, then you can decide whether or not you want to push harder depending on your Vcore and temperatures.

I need 1.488v for my 6600K to be at 4.7, how's that for losing the silicon lottery?

I'll try the x264 tests at the current multiplier (45) and voltage (1.360) and see how that goes. I'm a little concerned about that since the Prime95 tests were doing fine on temperature but failing due to rounding errors and other errors (I've already ran memtest86 for 12 hours with no issues, so I know it's not memory).

If the x264 tests pass, I'll move on to OCCT and RealBench.

The worst 6700K I had couldn't do more than 4.4 GHz stable, tested all the way from stock to 1.500v. You're lucky.
