Add to this old build or sell it and get something better?

Thread Starter
So I am thinking of replacing a painfully slow laptop that my mother has with a desktop PC that would handle the tasks better.

I have the current parts lying around from when I switched from AMD to Intel:
  • Phenom II x4 955BE
  • Gigabyte GA785GT-UD3H
  • HD5870
  • Seasonic 600w PSU

Both the CPU and GPU are old, therein lies the problem. It would definitely be better than the laptop AMD single core V160 CPU, but overall the Phenom II 955BE is old, the GPU as well. The CPU is a C2 stepping so not a great overclocker either. And so what will be left for me to buy is an HDD,RAM and possibly a case and maybe some cooler, although I do have one old one lying around as well, just not sure if the motherboard will fit.

The other option, which is the least I like, mainly because of tight tight budget constraints is to sell all those stuff, minus the PSU and buy a cheap Intel CPU,motherboard and some newer GPU, obviously I wont get much money from those old components, might be able to get enough for RAM and motherboard, which leaves the HDD and GPU.

Not sure what to do. My mother will not be gaming, but when I am visiting I might peruse in some gaming of not so light games.

The last paragraph, describes the root of the problem. The "old Phenom", will be just fine for your mother, for ordinary tasks like browsing, email, films, youtube, music. Same for the GPU. What i 'd buy, is an SSD instead of HDD. Even a 128GB will be plenty and will give new life to the PC. It will speed up things so much, that it will be as if you had upgraded the CPU. I don't think your mother will need more than 128GB and those cost about 50 euros nowdays. If she needs more storage, you could add a secondary HDD (smaller sizes don't cost too much).

So the real problem is, "how are you going to play on that too"... For which i have no solution to offer.

That makes zero sense. Only reason he would sell is to play games when he visits, so he would be building something else. I really doubt she would care about having a computer behind her monitor either? Not many would.

OP, just get a half decent GPU and play what you can when you visit if the budget is so limited. There are only a few games that really run poorly on a Quad Phenom II, and even still play lighter games for a short time.
