[PC Gamer] Factory overclocked Asus ROG Strix RX 480 has headroom to spare

As AMD's hardware partners often do, Asus thought it could improve upon the reference design of the Radeon RX 480, and the result is a factory overclocked ROG Strix RX 480 card that can be further tweaked at home without fear of burning up your motherboard.

...

Asus decided to take things a step further and redesign power allocation on is own. Its ROG Strix 480 uses a custom voltage regulator module (VRM) and specially designed printed circuit board (PCB) to draw "100 percent of the GPU power from the PCIe power connectors (rather than splitting the load between the connector and PCIe slot)."

Note the word "connectors," as in plural. Assuming that's not a typo (Asus doesn't indicate the power scheme outright, nor has it released press photos or put up a product page yet), it seems the ROG Strix RX 480 uses two PCIe connectors instead of one. Some may consider that a downgrade in design, though the benefits of an added cable are presumably superior overclocking performance and stability.

To that end, the ROG Strix RX 480 sports a 1,310MHz boost clockspeed in gaming mode and 1,330MHz clockspeed in OC mode. Both represent an overclock over AMD's reference 1,266MHz boost clock. If that's not enough, Asus says there's headroom for further tweaking.

...

The ROG Strix RX 480 will be available sometime around the middle of August. No word yet on price.

Still a while to go before this releases, but hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

Hope all the custom 480's represent a step forward in performance for POLARIS. Btw, this Strix looks really cool.

Assume 2x6pin?

As I've said a few times Asus is rumoured to allow voltage up to 1.35v

From what I've seen its a great looking card imo. don't care about leds at all but looks 10 series looks great with them off, on looks good too.

Interested to see if there are any shenanigans with the cooler this time.
Even with their notorious QC, and the wait time, it's an interesting card

Also, custom vrm could be a bad thing. Unless they mean same quality but routed differently, I assume fans and led on Pcie slot

kinda wish they were out. would love to send back my strix 1080 (have one day left to send it back) and give two strix 480's in crossfire a try.

edit:
actually i wish amd released their 1070 / 1080 counterparts instead of holding off for so long.

I don't blame you one bit. If 1060 is all its cracked up to be, it may be a futile effort to release it so late. I mean it will still sell in the long run, but will for sure miss opportunities

One can only hope. And given how these cards are performing with Vulkan/DX12 (I know, it's only a handful of titles, but I keep my cards for pretty long, still rocking a 670), it's really enticing to go team red this time around.
