Xpoint should be the midway between NVME drives vs DDR4 in pricing. (exponential term)


Since DDR4 currently is about $8-10 per GB while the former is 50 cent per GB. I assume X Point to be $2-$4 per GB.

Doesn't make sense that Optane drives on PCIE bus require KL chipset. References?

I have read KL will be the first chipset that could use it in the DIMM-slot formfactor - but the Optane drives aren't that.

Seriously interested for work applications (really massive simulations - disk I/O is a big time factor, existing NVME PCIE SSDs already help but imagining some Optanes striped using Raid0 or 1 would be yet another speed boost.

Still has to go through post and firmware seen a diagram way back when some laptops had a new booting structure this was way back when web os was something up used so you could surf web send emails before you got into os.

From what I remember it's something to do with how the computer runs the boot up process like op said it's limited by firmware and how computer initializes start up until they bypass that or give it a couple or enough ram to keep it persistent not sure you can achieve instant boot from pressing power to being on desktop.

Now, if Xpoint is this fast, wouldn't it be bottlenecked at roughly 3.5gb / sec on a PCI-E x4 interface?

They have to go like PCI-E x16 for over 12gb / sec speeds, and even then this will be crazy expensive, more like a RAM alternative.

Honestly, once you have the regular PCI-E SSDs that go 2gb / sec already, it's harder for consumers to notice the difference even in comparsion to SATA SSDs, so only the enterprise market will see any worthwhile use out of such insane speeds.

Plain SSDs can use parts that only validate at lower speeds. Its still a jump from standard flash storage in write cycle lifespan, even if you never hit its maximum theoretical speed.

The problem with OS booting is that it's mostly single threaded so unless it's fully threaded no matter how fast the CPU is it's going to be bottlenecked, especially as OS' get heavier and ever larger.
