Upgrading from HD5850, which GPU should i chose?

Hi,

First of all, I would like to apologize for my poor english frown.gif

So I need a new GPU. My reference HD5850 can't handle modern video games, i'm forced to play in 720p. Overheating problem went from bad to worse, but I'd rather have old games crashing every 30 mins than open my GC now and mess it up badly with my two left hands. The overheating is so bad, even with afterburner fan speed tweaks it's still getting to 90°C; and I notice games starting at 50fps then falling to 30 when it hits 90. I need a well built card that doesn't overheat like crazy. I'm not a power user, so I probably won't overclock my next GPU. I know a few things about computers, but I'm only a standard gamer, I'm not a power-user adjusting frequencies.

I'm on vacation and I won't stay more than a week without a GPU, I've already waited for 2 weeks. It seems I came at the worst time possible. As you can see, I don't change my GPU every then and now, so I have to make a short term decision while thinking about long term (4-5 years, my god I'll be 30...). I'm always looking for 60fps, even if that means halving the resolution.

My rig:
HD5850 1GB ref.
i5 760
12 GB DDR3
Asus P7H55 motherboard
Corsair CX400 (6 years old and my computer is running something like 16/24h)
1080p HDTV and 1680*1050 monitor, never at the same time.

My main objective is the RX480. But I'm afraid my old motherboard would fry someday before I change my CPU. I'm also traumatized by my HD5850 ref, this ref design was an overheating crap sounding like a steam engine that turns bad after only 2 years. RX480 8gb ref is at 260€ here, and i'll try to replace the crap cooler with something better. I might as well take an RX480 ref and sell it on ebay next year when new cards come out.

1060 GTX seems a great option, but some friends have warned me about poor drivers performance, and old GCN optimizations giving AMD an edge over time, 7970 being a great example. I'm waiting tuesday to see DX12 perfs, I won't put hundreds of bucks in a GPU Here it costs 280€ for customs, 320€ for the founder.

Finally, since I'm SO tired of waiting, I might as well put 350-500€ on the table and go for a better GPU (and PSU if needed). I'm looking for the best performance/price/"life expectancy" ratio - It has to perform well for the next 4-5 years. Is 1070 at 480€ a good choice?

I don't know what to do, and I hope you would point me to the right decision.

Keep in mind that in Europe, GPU vendors are applying a strange exchange rate: A 200$ GPU may cost 250€, nearly 280$. Thank you guys smile.gif

EDIT: I live in Paris, so keep in mind availability problems might be even worse than in the US/UK. We don't have customs RX480 XFX, and new nvidia GPUs can sometimes be a hassle to get (we'll see for 1060...)

I'm not sure what direction to steer you in on GPU I might personally lean toward a 290X in your situation, but I think upgrading that power supply first would be a good idea whatever you do.

Edit: re-read and saw overheating complaints. Maybe the 290x is not such a good idea but you would get a huge boost in performance for not a lot of money relatively speaking, if you lasted this long with a 5850, i'd say you'd get 4 years out of a 290x.

Well, 290X is a good suggestion but I have a few issues:
* I kept the 5850 because I was poor, now I'm rich(er). For the first time of my life I can put more than 200€ in a GPU and shoot every settings up while maintaining 60fps.
* Out of 6 years with 5850, I'd say only 4 were good. When current gen games came, it turned for the worse. I forced myself to play TW3 at 20fps 720p. I tried AC Unity: 15fps, Black Ops 3 5fps intro then crashes, Fallout 4 20fps, GTA V 25fps... The only games that are fairly playable are Fifa and Metal Gear Solid V.
* 290X are not sold anymore here. I can only get a reconditionned model at 180€. It seems their value will drop soon, so I won't be able to resell it without a major loss.

I will think about it if 1060s are crap. Thank you for your answer!

What does a 980ti cost there? I know they dropped from $1100-1200 to $600-700 here in Aus and should fit your needs more than well enough.

Otherwise i'd probably just go with your idea of getting something cheaper for the next 7 mths or so and swapping it out for the new high end cards. Have you considered something like a 750ti or amd equivalent for now? super cheap and still good enough for 1080p med settings for a little while longer and you wont need a PSU upgrade for it, meaning you put that money aside and save for a good psu with high end card next year. But then again i've got no idea how that CPU is holding up, could be a bottleneck on top end cards.

Hopefully someone who knows a lot more than I do will come along and give you real help.
