Help! regarding 4k playback on Core i5 750/760.

I currently have core i3 540 (1st gen i3 ) overclocked to 4.1ghz, but it still can't play 1080p60/ 4k30 fps videos without stuttering and or audio glitches. cpu usage is mostly 70-80% during playback. i have tried different settings and media players but issue still stands. i was thinking of buying gtx750/1040/1050 or something so i can use those for 4k videos. but i don't want to play games and this gt210 currently i own stops me from playing any games but i can still use it for 3d vision although it doesn't have enough power to accelerate 1080p60/ 4k30 videos. ( don't ask why i don't want to play games) so i thought upgrading to i5 is the cheapest option for me. there's a guy selling i5 750 for 60$ locally.

So i'm asking those who own i5 750/760 oc or stock. are you guys able to run 1080p60/ 4k30 fps videos without any issues and without any gpu HW acceleration ? if so, what media player are you using. thanks.

That is really weird.. Until a few months ago I was using a old phenom 2 945 paired with a 650ti and I had absolutely no problem playing back or streaming 4k.

Considering your CPU should be faster I would think yours would have no issues at all.

Edit: I misunderstood you a bit.. I thought you had a gtx 750 already, so I guess that explains it.

Even something small like 7750 or Gtx 750 (non TI) would work fine. GPU acceleration mostly isn't about how powerful the GPU is, it's about how new the hardware encoding block is. That means newer = better, even if it's a bottom barrel GPU.

i know that but gt210 is like 6-7 years old gpu. that's why i thought relying on cpu for it would be cheaper option. so those who own those cpus will have better idea.

you need a graphics card.

here's a gtx 950 for $125

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127935&cm_re=gtx_950-_-14-127-935-_-Product

it also has hdmi 2.0 for 4k60

i said already that i don't want to buy new graphics card. and i5 750 should be able to play 4k videos. that's why it's a question for those who already own it.

Youtube 4k works even on this i3, but not when i use any media player to watch videos recorded by my phone. i have tried google . some say it works some say it doesn't. i thought it would be better to ask here. smile.gif

The consensus here is that a low end, modern GPU is a surefire way to do it.

An i5 750 is a crapshoot. I've looked, and can't find any solid CPU benchmarks, but at some point a i5 750 isn't going to cut it for H.265 playback.

Assuming your video player has a decent backend (aka not VLC, its ffmpeg decoding is old and troubled), I would think it could handle 24p 4k h265... Not sure about higher framerates though.

I'd give MPV, Kodi, and MPC a shot if you haven't already tried them.
