[TheVerge] Lucasfilm Making A Virtual Reality Movie About Darth Vader

Industrial Light & Magic's virtual reality arm xLab is looking to some major Hollywood talent to create its next virtual reality experience, and the subject is as big as it gets. Writer David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) took the stage at Star Wars Celebration today, after it was announced that he is working on the next major initiative the company is working on. Lucasfilm creative executive Pablo Hidalgo broke the news, describing it as an original Star Wars narrative experience that will let viewers experience and be part of the story — and it will be all about Darth Vader.

Goyer is been a major creative force in genre films and TV shows, working on everything from Nolan's Batman films to the television show FlashForward, but working on something with xLab is clearly a different kind of challenge altogether. The project is an entirely original story within the Star Wars universe, written in conjunction with the same brain trust that is overseeing the new films, and it will be contributing to official series canon, Hidalgo said. But it won't be the kind of passive experience experience audiences have when they watch a TV show, or even a gaming experience.

"You are the visitor in this story that is happening in and around you, and to a certain extent you might even have some effect on," Goyer said. "You can pick up things, you can open things. You can push things, you can walk. You can touch characters." The film will also take place in a "persistent" world, that cycles through day and night, and continues to go on even after the "visitor" has gone through the story for the first time.

If this sounds like xLab is trying to eventually build OASIS or The Matrix, it's because in a lot of ways they are. Since we first talked to the team last year, it was clear their focus wasn't simply on the kind of promotional tie-ins or gaming experiences that have been VR's baby steps. It was the potential to use virtual reality, augmented, and mixed reality to create a new kind of narrative experience — with the world and characters of Star Wars serving as the creative palette. While xLab has turned out several experimental projects (and announced earlier today that its lightsaber game Trials on Tatooine would be getting a public release this Monday), the untitled Vader project seems to be the first attempt to realize that grander vision.

"The difference between cinema and television and VR — particularly with the fidelity that [the xLab] team is working on, is that you really feel like you there. The sense of presence isn't just a buzzword," Goyer said. "And it's surprisingly very emotional. It can make you sad, and make you lean in, and make you feel for a character in a way you haven't before. In a way that you can't really do in any other medium. And it can scare you."

Of course, teasing is one thing; actually completing and distributing the finished project is something else. But while it may sound like the Vader VR movie is the stuff of science fiction, it may be here sooner than people think. "I'm really, really excited for a year or two, whenever it happens, and you guys get to experience what we're working on," Goyer told the crowd. "It's pretty mindblowing."

I'm not deep into Star Wars lore or anything, so feel free to clarify for me, but I never understood why Darth Vader was so much in focus. I had always thought he was just one bad (and powerful) guy out of many, but his status has turned him into some kind of mythical thing along for producers and fans. At least, the Star Wars universe has so many interesting things to it that it just seems silly to limit it to so few people.

The orginal trilogy was mainly focused on Luke, but with the addition of the prequel triology, we see that the whole story from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi was actaully all about Anakin, who was the chosen one to being balance to the force, with his rise up through the Jedi, his fall to the dark side, and his redemption by killing the emporer. Luke is just a poser.

Who care about Darth Vader? We need more Death Stars. We can never have enough Death Stars.

We had a Death Star in Episodes 2, 4, 6, 7 now in Rogue 1 and I hope we can continue the tradition with Episodes 8,9 and 10 as well.

Except that we all know the truth that Anakin/Darth Vader is just a whiny kid who's an insanely obedient lapdog when you tell him you'll give him the power to save everyone... and yet he kills everyone instead?

Sorry but after Revenge of the Sith, I genuinely cannot see Darth Vader in the same light anymore. Luke DID inherit his father's ability to whine though... that's for sure. tongue.gif
