Personal Comparison of Stock 480 vs. Max OC 480

Thread Starter
I've put together a set of benchmarks comparing stock clocks(1266/2000) vs. my max playable OC(1405/2200)

My aim in doing this is to show, even though I have a "budget" system, that the RX480 has potential. I've seen a few sites here and there throw out a couple overclocked vs. stock benchmarks but nothing across a broad set of games.

My pc:
CPU - FX-8300 @ 4.4ghz @ 1.41v
MOBO - MSI 970a-g46 NB @ 2400 - HT @ 2600
RAM - 16gb Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600
GPU - XFX RX480 with Der8auer's modded bios / Aftermarket Cooler - Arctic Accellero Mono Plus w/Gelid Extreme TIM
PSU - 650w Rosewill ARC series Bronze Rated
Monitor(s) - Dual HP W2071d Monitors @ 1600x900

(side note; I have a 32" 1080p display that I was using for my main gaming monitor however my wife thought it looked better in the bedroom)

GPU Settings:
Stock
1266mhz GPU Core @ default voltage(1150mv)
2000mhz Memory @ default voltage (1000mv)
150% Power Level (Wattman Max)

Overclocked (max playable OC)
1405mhz GPU Core @ 1200mv
2200mhz Memory @ 975mv
165% Power Level

Programs/Tweaks used:
Asus GPU TweakII
HWinfo64
3DMark
Uingine
Der8auer's modded bios - Download Here
The Stilt's Ellesmere Backdoor Mod (no longer avaliable)
GPU-Z

The Benchmarks:
Note; All benchmarks were done using either the highest preset, or next to highest (see AotS) @ 1600x900 resolution. (Virtual Super Resolution didn't always prevent some games from taking control and sending my monitor out of range so I scrapped other resolutions for now, will update in the future with 1080p results)

Results:

Conclusion:
There are big gains to be had with this card with even moderate overclocks. Although my other parts may be holding me back, I'm still able to post respectable frames across all of the major titles. I'm confident we'll see in a weeks time what this card is capable of once the AIB models are released. With my aftermarket cooler I never saw temps rise above 60c on the core and 74c on the vrm. That should be an indication that there's some headroom left in these cards if cooled and tuned properly.

(Will update in the near future with 1080p results, also sorry about shoddy picture quality. They didn't look nearly that bad before I uploaded them)

+Rep, nicely done.

Nice work. thumb.gif

I wonder if differences would be greater on a higher resolution.

I'll add to it as I do more testing.

Could you maybe also post a few benches with default clocks but undervolt by 50-60mv and see how the temps and performance hold up ?
Thank you for the great work!
I noticed that your score at stock and 150% power target is higher than guru3d score even though they have much more powerful CPU (5960X). Do you think that performance increase by just increasing the power target?
Can you do benchmarks at completely stock (100% power target) as well?

The performance on this card varies under different scenarios. At stock and 150% power target it performs much better than stock @ 100%. Alternately, the card performs better @ stock settings and undervolted. I'll do some more benchmarks soon.

And the power draw at 1.4GHz?
i think it will be about 250W but who cares? GTX1060 also will eat more when you OC
