HDMI (2.0b) to Dual Link DVI Adapter - GTX 1080, 3 x 1440p60 monitors

Thread Starter

I have a 3 monitor setup, two of which only support dual link DVI (1440p, 60hz). Unfortunately my new GTX 1080 only has 1 DVI port which means that I had to dig out my old Accell DP to Dual Link DVI active adapter again. Also unfortunately, I have had and continue to have periodic issues with the adapter cutting out, especially when resuming from sleep. I have two adapters with the same issue and I've also tried several high quality DVI cables. I also have it powered by an external USB charger. I think it's better than it was but not fixed.

I'd like to get rid of the active adapter and the GTX 1080 has a HDMI 2.0b port which supports the required resolution and refresh rate, where previous revisions didn't. It's my understanding that traditionally HDMI is electrically compatible with single link DVI but I was wondering if HDMI 2.0b extends the compatibility to dual link DVI through a passive adapter? I've done quite a bit of Googling and haven't found any definitive answers.

Does anyone have any personal experience with maximum supported resolution and refresh rate when running a passive HDMI (2.0b) to DVI adapter? Thanks for any input!

Yeah that or a cable with HDMI on one side and DVI on the other. I know passive adapters didn't used to work for anything over 1920x1200 at 60Hz and I was wondering if the new HDMI revisions changed anything.

Yeah i am also looking, maybe a DisplayPort 1.2 to 1.4 to DVI-I Dual Link?

I found one i think, what i can read is that you can go from a DisplayPort to DVI-I Dual Link, and have the full 2560 x 1600 pix.

I know you can get DP to DVI adapters. The issue is that, last time I checked, you need a dual link DVI adapter for resolutions higher than 1920x1080 or so and they typically have to be active/powered by USB. They're also expensive and don't work well. I would know, I have two of them.

So even if it's a DisplayPort 1.2 to DVI-I Dual Link?

Or buy the Club 3D DisplayPort to DVI Dual Link-adapter 2560 x 1600 pixel, but cost a lot.

If so then the only thing we can do is buy a monitor with a DisplayPort mad.gif
