Question about Alienware 17" R3 Notebook with Graphics amplifier add on.

I am checking this for a good friend of mine who is a trucker ,and literally lives in his truck .He is an avid PC gamer ,but seeing as he lives on the road he has been using only notebooks for a few years. About 3-4 months ago ,he picked up the Alienware 17" notebook with the 6710QM mobile cpu ,and GTX 970M GPU. Today ,he spotted a Microcenter ,after I told him about them ( He had previously been buying all his gear at Best Buy)and stopped in and grabbed the Alienware graphics amplifier box ,and a ASUS STRIX GTX 1070 ,and 32GB of Ballistix 2400 mhz memory. He is under the impression that his GTX 1070 will work in SLI with his GTX 970M ,(that is what the dude at MC supposedly told him.......) already in the notebook ,but I told him I didn't think that would be possible. Is there something I am missing with this Graphics amplifier thingy? I also mentioned that he would have been better off with 16 GB of higher grade, faster memory with tighter latency . Any help greatly appreciated!

When you plug in the amp the 970m shuts down and the 1070 takes over. Also I believe the 1070 has issues currently working with the amp but the 1080 doesn't.

I thought that was the case ! He said it seems to be working now , but being he has it set up in the sleeper cab of a Volvo 18 wheeler ,and he does not have an external monitor, I think it may have been overkill ! He already upgraded his HDD with a 1 TB SSD that he got for $500 about a month ago ! His notebook does have a 4K screen ,but at 17" he says windows icons are way too tiny to see at 4K ,so he runs it at 1080P . It would seem that the GTX 1070 is too powerful for 1080P ! At least he has a path to upgrade his laptop with ,but being that the internal graphics card is obviously plugged into a 16X PCI-E slot , the box only runs at PCI-E 4X 3.0 as I am assuming the chipset only supports 20 PCI-E lanes or maybe less,I don't keep up too much on notebook chipsets . Thank you for taking time to reply ! I am going to let my buddy know he should join this forum to get solid info on his system . Thanks again!
