To upgrade or not to upgrade. That is the question!

Hi there,

So I have a 290x coming to me that I got for a really good price used. I had been using an old 9600GT while I was waiting for the RX480. Seeing the price of the 480 I decided to grab the cheap 290x as it probably can keep up with the games I am playing currently.

So the question is, should I get rid of the 2500k @4.8GHz I'm using now to something more recent like skylake or should I just buy some faster ram and wait for zen to drop and upgrade then?

The 2500k is still a good CPU and I can still sell it at a good price and I'm worried that when the time zen and kabylake comes out the 2500k will be worth nothing.

Well what do you guys think? thumb.gif

Honestly, I think your fine either way, but I would hold off until Kaby Lake or Zen. People love Sandy Bridge, and I am sure you will not have a hard time finding a buyer when the time comes especially if it clocks well like yours. I would just wait on ram if you want to upgrade, because you are going to have to go to DDR4 anyway. Your 2500k isn't going to bottleneck the 290x so I wouldn't be in a rush to upgrade! thumb.gif

Sometimes I wish I'd bought a 2600K when they were released. SB is still an amazing uArch and there's nothing worth upgrading to when it comes to gaming so wait for Zen and see whether that is good for the price. If not either still keep that 2500K or get another Intel.

I guess the performance of the 2500k is pretty good still but I kinda wanted to go mITX and get an M.2 ssd. But I guess the cost to performance gain with the upgrade may not be there

Thanks man.

I am in the same boat as you, I wanna do Kaby Lake mITX and m.2. It is hard to justify when my hardware works fine though, haha. biggrin.gif

The biggest improvement in performance now doesn't come from CPU's but from SSD's and GPU's and if you've got an SSD already and a decent GPU there's basically nothing to upgrade to. I have a really low end 240GB SSD but there is no difference between this and any of the other SSD's I've tested. Windows boots up just as fast, programs are as responsive and so, unless you absolutely need the performance, an M2 SSD won't make your experience better in any way.

If you want to spend money get a freesync screen.

I have been looking for a decent freesync monitor but I don't really know if I want to upgrade to 1440p or keep at 1080p. I like the idea of more pixels but maybe the 290x wont be enough to drive them??

I am more of a refresh rate over pixels kind of guy. So for me, that sweet spot is 1440p @ 144hz. Have yet to upgrade because they are expensive, but I want to soon. 290x will be enough for some games at 1440p, just depends on what kind of gameplay experience you want. The freesync monitors are much cheaper than g-sync, which I am jealous of.
