PH-TC14PE Not Cooling an FX 8350

Thread Starter
I've been running an FX 8350 with a PH-TC14PE in three fan configuration for about six months now. It started out fairly well in the winter, but as the weather has gotten warmer, the cooling has totally tanked. The last straw that seems to have pushed it too far was the introduction of an RX 480. Now, even at at stock, it idles around 30C. The chip isn't a good overclocker, but even a mild overclock pushes temperatures into the danger zone. I have the system in a Fractal Arc XL, so I would think it has some room for airflow. I also just applied some fresh TX-4 paste on the CPU, and that helped a bit, but not nearly enough. I'm not sure if there is a better air cooling solution that I can try, but I certainly don't want to leave this the way it is. I have a SilverStone Raven 2 sitting around that I could try, if the case is the problem. I would also be willing to give a Noctua NH-D15 a shot, but I don't see how that could be much better. The only other thing I could think to do is use the old XSPC water cooling equipment that I have. It's dirty, but it's all still functional. I just don't understand why the temps are as high as they are. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a case airflow problem. I say this because CPU temps don't change with different GPUs unless the airflow to CPU cooler temperature changes. I think you might find "Ways to Better Coolng" link in my sig of interest. 1st post is index, click on topic to see it. I suggest starting with 5th topic and using a temperature monitor similar to 2nd topic.

Well, I've been experimenting with it. It looks like it was actually a PSU problem. I opened the case last night thinking that it was airflow and touched the PSU. It was burning hot. I just picked up a new one this morning, and temps plummeted.

Good catch!

The Phanteks 14PE is a 2nd string cooler. It was good in its day but those days are long gone. I'm still using one but other coolers are much better. Go for the D15 as it is much better. Or a D14. Or a Silverstone HE01.

The motherboard you are using has VRMs that tend to get too hot when pushed and the above coolers have adjustable fans that can be lowered to blow some cool air onto said VRMs.

PH-TC14PE is every bit as good as good as NH-D15 and I think better than HE01. Besides, it is newer then NH-D14 and HE01.

It's fans can be lowered too. The thumb screw on base crossbar can be removed and replaced with a normal screw. Can't reach it with fingers (thumb) anyway and with a normal screw fan sets a the thickness of base, crossbar and screw above surface of CPU (20mm) That is 28mm above motherboard. Can't get fans much lower than that. With some high speed fans it's even better. (You know this) tongue.gif

Not in my experience it isn't. It may be ok for intel but is a piece of junk on an AMD.

You do realize that your results with the 14PE are an anomaly. An endless stream of tests shows that the 14PE is essentially on par with the D15, and a tick better than the HE01. I have tested them all numerous times myself and come up with that same result. It also isn't low pressure by any means, I really think there is an issue with your 14PE.

And, yes, I have tested it on an FX-8150 and 8350 with OC to 4.9.

I knew going in that the PH-TC14PE wasn't necessarily the best cooling solution, but it should be near the top of the pack for air. I was getting cooling performance on par with the stock cooler. Regardless, the PH-TC14PE wasn't the problem. It's still installed and doing a much better job. The old PSU was putting out some messed up voltage. I have an AX860i installed now, and the temps are within what I would consider a normal range. I haven't tried to overclock again yet, but I did run Prime95 at stock, and the temps didn't go above 37C. That's a lot more in line with what I'd expect to see from the PH-TC14-PE or any high end air cooler.

You're saying this like it's a fact.

Also your experience doesn't weight anywhere near all the reviews and testing they've done.

If you say so, but even modified it doesn't cool as well as the Thermalright Silver Arrow IBE Extreme using the same fans in the same case. Or the Silverstone HE01.
