The CNIL has issued a formal notice to Microsoft stating that Windows 10 "must stop collecting excessive user data" from the ten million people in France who have the OS installed without their consent. The watchdog highlighted the fact that Microsoft records which apps users download and how long they spend on them.

Additionally, the CNIL wants Microsoft to stop using cookies to serve up ads without properly informing users and without offering a way to opt out. It also takes issue with the 4-digit PIN system that lets users access their Microsoft accounts; the Commission says it is insecure as it allows an unlimited number of login attempts.

Finally, there's the problem of Microsoft continuing to transfer French account holders' personal data to the US under the Safe Harbor agreement, despite the European Court of Justice ruling it invalid back in October last year.

What data they collect ?

Does data they collect happens anonymously ?! if so then why is that an issue ?

I don't know why many are so scared to upgrade. I never felt my privacy was violated after 1 year of using windows 10. Noting about me was stolen and leaked online or used against me in anyway. So, what are the reason to be against this Microsoft "spying" thing ?

Whack them with a baguette until they pass out.

Personally I don't see a downside to a country enforcing higher privacy standards either. It would be nice if our govts cared about us as much as France's apparently does. It's past time for the ownership of little data to be given back to the people.

As for what they can do... there are treaties for a reason. Microsoft would have to be based in some non treaty bound corporate stooge country if they wanted to avoid this sort of thing. Based in america they're at least bound by the treaties america is bound by.

One can hope, but perhaps this might cause a version of Windows 10 to roll out with all of the "additional" telemetry nullified. Kinda like those N or E builds without Media Center or Internet Explorer.

I've gotten to the point where (while I'm not a fan of) the UI does not bug me too much, but all of the additional phoning home is completely off putting. All of the install.wim tweaking and messing with packages/dlls/firewall is just inane, and I don't feel like it's honestly worth doing to make Win 10 usable for me. Seriously, crack out Wireshark and at all of the packets flowing out of it when it is supposedly "idle."

I get Google looks at me, Android/iOS as well (I don't use these either,) my phone probably sends back stuff I say on it to a corporate and NSA database somewhere even when turned off (I actually put it into a small faraday cage when not used.) GSM is very easy to intercept and create fake basestations, 3G and LTE tech probably is too.

There are probably also backdoors in all of the routers going to my computer, and in the firmware to my ethernet adapter as well so they can tunnel in that way too... but I'm not just consciously going to let Win 10 upload all sorts of suspicious looking data to Microsoft's Cloud... it's finally just too much.

Win 7 partially does it as well (without the telemetry updates,) but no where near on this scale. And Linux just won't work for me at the moment.

TBH, why?
Apple I understand, because they aren't there to sell us ads or gather information. But the rest, why not?

Facebook is collecting insane amount of data on us to show ads on Facebook. A recent example in my local news report, showed that if they talked about something either via Facebook messages or a phone call with a friend, or even have Facebook app active on the phone, Facebook is literally listening to them.
As an example they chose a random topic (like a travel location or some other topic), and within a couple of minutes Facebook mysteriously showed them an ad on the subject, after they talked, not searched in Facebook or looking at posts, but just talked face to face with someone.
That is not isolated example. There are many you can find.

They also showed that google is doing similar things with hangouts and private emails.

So why shouldn't they do it on the rest?

I mean, I understand why they won't. But why its an invalid comparison? MS is gather information to try and give us either ads or apps, Facebook is doing it to throw ads at us, google are doing the same with their ads service. Overall, it is pretty much the same.

thank you for showing how apps on a smartphone are not comparable to an OS on a PC.

Silence leaves people to come to their own conclusions resulting in misinformation that then gives MS a reason to not engage, which they can then just say that "we do not comment on speculation".

Ignorance is the best defense.

China, wisely, have blocked all M$py blocking by blocking all IP's to which telemetry data is being sent so M$py obtain very little information about China. Washington's lackeys in other parts of the world, however, aren't nearly as intelligent (in fact I'd rather have rats running the EU than the current fools who call themselves politicians).
