[ExtremeTech] Windows 10 gets one last, desperate nagware update - Page 7

Think long and hard about it because it would really suck to have to pay for it when you could have got it for free.

Windows 7 is a dying platform. There is already websites that don't support windows 7 and will be plenty more to come.

If you are choosing not to go to 10 then that means your days with windows are numbered and you should start thinking about a permanent alternative.Unless you don't want to use windows anymore in the future, take the free upgrade.

Now this is just my opinion and how I see it.I have held out for this long but I am moving to 10 now along with some friends of mine because I think that I still want a future with windows.

Don't get me wrong,I really don't like the direction Microsoft is taking with this, but I also feel that windows is the best option for me when it comes to computing, and it will be kind of fun to explore all the new options that come with 10.

I also run linux on a few other pc's I have along with a hackintosh, but I like to have all the bases covered.
I'm sorry, website that dont support 7? Website support is based on your browser, not your OS, unless you are using IE for some reason, or have an incredibly poorly written site that still needs a OS based plugin like back in the windows 2000 days.

And windows 7 still has four years of security updates left in it. Hardly "dead" by any means.

Your so-called power users will simply jump into local group policy and disable windows defender. Like we've been doing with plenty of other stuff for many years.
Cool, but that doesn't fix any of the other issues.

Windows 7 is the ultimate in the refined, keyboard+mouse desktop PC experience. 8 and 10 are toys that you run on touchscreen appliances. 10 is a little more desktop friendly, but you trade your privacy for it, and it's still not as clean as 7. I use my OS as a tool to launch the programs that I want, I don't need hyper-integrated "apps" and an OS that holds my hand and tells me when it's going to update, and sneak-changes settings for me.

10 is so bad that they are literally having a hard time giving it away. Let that sink in. It is worth less than $0 to a lot of people.

You're just old-school. I too follow the old paradigm that the operating system is meant to serve the user, but the cool new hip meme paradigm is the user as a product (think Facebook and other free services). However, even if you BUY Windows 10, you're still the product. Windows 10 is *literally* a botnet and a spyware The problem is, that financing this is financing a decision that affects every Windows user. It's like taking a dump in the pool, party's over everyone.

Anyway, MS intentions with Windows 10 are pretty clear: they want Windows as a service. It's the wet dream of every software publisher, every piece of software as a service, in the cloud. Zero freedom, zero control, zero ownership, the ultimate DRM.
That's the scary part. In fact, being free signals to me that it's more of a trojan horse than anything else.

But it's not at all unreasonable to let people know that something that can save them a hundred bucks or more is expiring soon.
I feel it's a public service to inform people that 10 isn't all that great. I fix computers as a side business, and I've had countless people bring machines to me wanting Win10 to be taken off. Maybe they are just all idiots but you can't dispute that 10 is a mediocre deal at best, at the current price of $0.

Okay? Fine? As I said, I get it: you don't like Win10.

But it only gets worse once you have to pay, right? So it's entirely reasonable to alert people to an expiring promotion.

I mean, let's be blunt here: are you really expecting to stay on Windows 7/8 till the end of time? Because that's what you're actually proposing.

No, I waited until something better came out. Lots of us jumped from XP to 7. I got my free upgrade to 10 and hated it. I used it for maybe 2 months and got tired of all the problems.

When 7 "quits working" for me, I'll upgrade to something that does. But as it stands, 100% of all my hardware and software work perfectly on Windows 7. I have no need to upgrade.

I still use XP on a bunch of older systems that need to be lightweight. I even have an XP VM that runs on my ESXi server with I think 64 MB of RAM. Newer isn't always better.

And, what, you're just pretending that Microsoft didn't say that this will be the last version of Windows?

Do you really think things are going to go back to the way they were before? Really? What is it about Microsoft that makes you think that's even remotely plausible under any circumstance?

I'm seeing a lot of hostility here. Is the do nothing alternative really that bad?

Problem: Windows 10 is not as good as Windows 7

Solution: Keep using Windows 7

When the problem changes, my solution might. But just because MS is making a dumb choice doesn't mean that we all need to have a panic reaction and upgrade to Windows 10.

And, if 10 is the last version of Windows, then it's never going to get better than 7, so I'll keep using Windows 7 that I bought in 2008 while everyone else rents their OS.

Well here we are then, a couple of days from the set upgrade deadline and I still don't feel the urge or the need to upgrade.

I thought I would wait till the last second before I do a fresh install on my gaming computer to permit the most up to date version of Win 10, but alas reality is a *****.

  1. I don't foresee myself buying any games until 2077 is released from CDProject Red. I refuse to buy Marked-Up (CAD $80 for an AAA game)/DRM riddled games.
  2. The hardware scene has become a literal farce with price gauging galore at every tear, so I don't see me buying GPUs at reasonable prices which largely existed pre Titan/Fury craptastica.

So really no need for Win 10 at this time or ever.

Even if all hardware released after today was incompatible with Windows 7, people like us would be happy with second-hand x99 and Titan X cards in 5 years!

Yeah.... I've wanted to play with Windows 10 but to me it's about as useful as a Windows Phone at an Android conference, since they never fixed the real time clock bug - Intel did with the external clock generator. When I upgrade to Skylake (if I upgrade to it) I'll look into the pro version of Windows 10 so I at least have a semblance of control over how it runs... Free version just has too many restrictions, forced upgrades, and it's protective nature nuking perfectly valid programs you paid for and installed. At least that way on that specific hardware I'll be able to actually submit more than two benches to HWBot. Upgrading now for me is pointless as I'd be locked out of most benches in my gaming rig.
