I agree and unfortunately, I don't think we'll see it before 2017.

I cant say 2x Titan Xps are not enough for 165Hz 1440p.

Im running on one Titan Xp @ 2050/11000 (with AC waterblock) and GTA V is spitting out around 144 fps when not running into CPU limit (5960X@4.7 btw rolleyes.gif)

Most of the times i even play in 5120x2880 with a healthy 50-80 fps biggrin.gif Your SLI scaling must be faulty!

Singe Card ftw thumb.gif

I have no CPU bottleneck. That only pops up if I activate the extended distance scaling, which I do not do. You're just not running your settings high enough. Which is understandable since you only have a single card and are used to not enabling certain features because you feel they're too taxing on your system.

To be honest, I don't think he does it wrong: maxed out settings, 5960X @ 4.7, 128GB of 2.8GHz CL15 1T - these are the settings for 2152MHz 1080s in SLI compared to projected TXP performance across the board: http://imgur.com/a/RIRcH

When SLI works, which is rare nowdays, its scaling is so erratic, while TXP offers consistent performance all the time compared to dual 1080 where the 2nd card is an expensive paperweight half the time. Even worse for Titan X (Pascal).

If we could guarantee that 1080 SLI worked more than in 50% of situations, we'd have something like Titan X (Pascal) performance in some games and high scaling in others, but atm it's 20% scaling high, 30% worse than Titan X (Pascal) and 50% not at all or worse than a single card.

I'm not sure all the SLI hate.

It works a hell of a lot better than Crossfire in AAA titles, which is what SLI is for in the first place.

You don't need an SLI profile for Kerbal Space Program but for Far Cry Primal or dear God Elite Dangerous... It works a lot better than crossfire.

I don't feel like going over the SLI fight again, where people who buy a single card ridicule the ones who get more, because "SLI is bad and it's a waste of money", just like non-Titan XP members sometimes ridicule us for buying a card that is way overpriced and makes no logical sense to buy. Forget the scaling portion. The problem here wasn't even about SLI. It was about SLI Titan XP's not having enough to max out 1440p at the moment. At which point, he decided to take an example of the FPS I was getting, by saying he's getting 144fps all the time except when he gets a cpu bottleneck, and concluding that SLI is bad and he is smarter by having just 1 card.

Unless a game is seriously broken, on average you can expect 70-80% scaling with SLI. Some games are even 90%+. The problem with a lot of SLI scaling tests, is that they don't take into account cpu bottlenecking. If his claim that he gets 144fps at all times except under cpu bottleneck are true, then it means 2 things. First, he doesn't know what a cpu bottleneck is, and second, he's probably not running the game maxed out.

So that suggests SLI is not the way to go. That suggests blowing a wad on Titan XP is likely to be better than blowing a slightly bigger wad on two 1080's if one hopes to get anywhere close to 60fps @ 4K.

Whatever I choose will be going underwater and OC'd, fronted with an i7-6900K (also OC'd).

Even then it sounds like we have to wait for Volta to get something that can do 60fps @ 4K with (performance) headroom to spare.

I'm weighing up my options. TXP now? Or 1080 now and Volta later. Help! Confused. Can't decide. wheee.gifwink.gif

I couldn't decide between single TXP or 1080 SLI so yeah I went with TXP SLI smile.gifsmile.gif

I do know what a CPU bottleneck is since its exactly what you described the extended distance scaling which brings it into cpu bottleneck. Thats why i play with 0% extended distance @ 1440p and 100% @ 5K.

And i do have some settings tweaked for personal preference and no visual decrease (even an improvement for me)

Settings i adjusted:
Shader Very High -> High (no visual decrease test it yourself)
PostFX Ultra -> High (no visual decrease since i dont wanna play with motion blur **** anyway which destroys image quality)
Grass Ultra -> High
Also using a lot of texture mods and VisualV which should tank fps a bit.

As i said i have a solid 120+fps all the time and even 50+ @5k. So if you dont get 165 with 2 cards your SLI scaling is just bad! Thats simple logic. Microstuttering neglected beforehand.

Imo you should try playing with 4xDSR 0% Smoothness and 100% extended Distance Detail, where you scaling should be much better and for a crystal clear image thumb.gif

Edit: by the way even at 0% extended distance gta5 runs into cpu limit with a 5960X@4.7 and ONE Titan Xp see pic:
