Forget the scaling portion. The problem here wasn't even about SLI. It was about SLI Titan XP's not having enough to max out 1440p at the moment. At which point, he decided to take an example of the FPS I was getting, by saying he's getting 144fps all the time except when he gets a cpu bottleneck, and concluding that SLI is bad and he is smarter by having just 1 card.

Unless a game is seriously broken, on average you can expect 70-80% scaling with SLI. Some games are even 90%+. The problem with a lot of SLI scaling tests, is that they don't take into account cpu bottlenecking. If his claim that he gets 144fps at all times except under cpu bottleneck are true, then it means 2 things. First, he doesn't know what a cpu bottleneck is, and second, he's probably not running the game maxed out.

No need to go through it again. I just picked up a bunch of games and tested these on TXM, 1080 and 1080 SLI and then calculated TXP ratios. It happens scaling is good only in Frostbite engine and a new Tomb Raider DX12. All the other times, a single TXP wins.

5960X @ 4.7GHz does not and can not bottleneck anything here. It's up to those games that obviously are more and more, that don't support SLI at all or very badly.

If money is of no concern, of course you'll get 2x TXP. But, if you're trying to stay under 2k, a single TXP is a much better choice for 1200 than 2x 1080 for 1400 or more.

to ease the minds of those thinking " why on earth would you take TXP SLI useless OMG!". These were my personal reasons:

-The games that I typically play (RPG eyecandy mostly) such as dragon age, The Witcher, tomb raider, ESO on my g-sync 4K screen all happen to greatly benefit from SLI as I noticed on my previous GTX 780 Ti setup in the passed years. So I'm guaranteed the same personally proven benefit with simply loads more horsepower under the belt.

-the step from a 780 Ti to TXP Pascal (that's essentially a future 1080 Ti with more memory I guess) is a considerable, big upgrade in fact since I jump 2 generations forward

-money didn't matter, only performance

I admit that in most other situations (money concerns, different type of games,....) it would make prefect sense to go for 1 TXP or 1 GTX 1080 as well so I respect all the people that make that decision just as much as I do my own

Imo its pretty easy.

WQHD 144Hz+ -> One Titan Xp is more than enough
4K/5K/DSR users -> Two Titan Xp can bring some extra power in some games
post #2864 of 7609
I'd say for max eye candy in Ultrawide 1440p that Titan XP SLI is desirable as well. A single one is super nice, but when those 144hz UWs come out, it'll be a good bit of heft to have.

Please if anyone could chime in I'd appreciate it thank you.

confirmed on both my cards. These cards scream for watercooling as concluded by multiple reviewers/users. Massive thermal throttling and lowered performance. Can't wait till my waterblocks arrive to rerun my test after I put them on

Do you play at 4K 60hz? The reason I ask is because I have gone from a single 780Ti to a 1080, and am waiting on my Titan to arrive now because the 1080 can only handle 40fps in some games, whereas the Titan should handle it OK until some decent 4K 100hz+ or OLED monitors become available. Wouldn't your two Titan's be throttled way back to only push 60pfs on g-sync?

GTX 1080 SLI did great at 4K, IMO, though most of it was a task to get running in 4K @ 60+ FPS. Very doable in most titles. The only title that I got around to test and had serious trouble with was Crysis 3. Disabling AA and turning shaders to high did the trick IIRC. The Titan XP should only improve on that (especially since Crysis 3 has great scaling for SLI). I'd love to see 4K 100Hz panels with G-sync this year.

Yes, I play on the Asus ROG Swift PG27AQ. Currently, 4K@60Hz is still the maximum eyecandy currently possible gaming wise until it's successor with 4K@120Hz/144Hz comes out beginning 2017 (They already have it running in proof of concept since 3 months) Single Titan XP handles modern games very decent when put on water with averages close to 60fps but still drops down below. On air, due to thremal throttling you can only reach good results with lots of airflow and noise though !

The 2 titans will not be throttled at all or affected even. The 60Hz on the monitor is simply only capable of showing 60fps but it does not affect the cards in any way. One can choose to limit the cards to generate only 60fps in the software/drivers but again this is user's choice, not something the monitor imposes on the hardware. On the contrary, besides having a flat out continuous 60fps eyecandy with no drops below 60Hz anymore they create the extra leeway for the upgrade to my new monitor in half a year. I'm hoping the new ROG Swift will be 32" 4K@144Hz which would unlock the full potential of a TXP SLI setup.

Since I'm really happy with a solid 60frames for the sort of eyecandy games I play I'm simply maxxed out hardware wise currently but I understand that fps-game people will never settle for 60hz monitors so they will prefer to stay on the lower resolutions to keep the fps to 100 and up. They get alot less scaling though from SLI setups

What?!

not sure why you would say that wth.gif

Go read ONE review about the Titan X Pascal and you will see there are quite a lot of games that barely run 100fps(not 144) at 1440p and a lot of games are to come which will be even more demanding, especially with the new consoles being released soon.

One Titan XP is certainly not "more than enough" for wqhd 144hz.
