No. It's fine. It wasn't that. What changed my mind was the news that Nvidia are bringing Volta forward to 2017 by manufacturing it on their established 16nm fab. That changed the landscape of everything.

We're cool, dude.

And yes, depressingly, Nvidia will continue with their policy of gradually increasing their prices. Look. They have us conditioned to expect it already.

Next time round, xx80 will be $800. Titan will be $1500.

Our only hope is for AMD to turn it round and suddenly be competing at the top end and putting genuine pressure on Nvidia for market share in that performance bracket.

Just comparing the numbers, 2x 1080 will still be faster than the new titan right?

SLi is like 2 x CPU sockets, software specific application.

It's still awesome and if you have the money, you would do that, but

 

1 fast vid card is better as is 1 fast CPU for mainstream bug free usage.

 

I would push 1 vid card over SLi, and i have SLi'd since the 295 series, and crossfire since the ati 2900 series (only because SLi support is lacklustre or you have to wait quite a long time for it to be supported, by then something new is out and the old game is finished and done with)

 

IF nvidia really improved support for SLi, then thats a different story. IF.

I think Nvidia are trying to force the hands of the software houses. I think Nvidia originally intended for software to be written with explicit SLI. I think almost no-one did except benchmark designers. Most publishers relied on Nvidia's implicit SLI to do the leg work for them, only tweaking titles where necessary so they didn't crash or have issues. But they often didn't go as far as optimising games for SLI.

My understanding is that Nvidia are taking a gamble: that by withdrawing implicit SLI for DX12 onwards, they hope they can force publishers to write for explicit SLI and thereby dramatically improve the scaling that can be achieved with SLI. To help them, they have reduced formal SLI support to a maximum of 2-way, so that the number of combinations of GPU's to write and test for are reduced. If it works, and software IS written and optimized for SLI, and if scaling IS much improved, I think Nvidia hope that many more buyers may actually be persuaded to buy extra cards for two way SLI configurations.

3 and 4-way SLI was never good outside of benchmarks. In many games performance went down using more than 2 or the gain was incredibly small. Not worth the money at all.

Personally I'm never going SLI or CF again, too many issues.

Oh well, there has been alot of issues with SLI/CF, even on AAA releases. Especially if you play games on release day. I can mention a few, the reason I can remember these especially? They are the reason I stopped using SLI.

Far Cry 3, did not support multi GPU and crashed with SLI. Steam forums were glowing for weeks if not months, workarounds did not work for most people, and if they did, the gpu usage were still low/jumpy. Many users simply disabled SLI/CF and played the game with one card. I did just that, and I completed the game before a fix was out. Yay.

Far Cry 4, almost exact same thing, bad scaling and shadow bug with multi gpu. Workaround was to change SLI bits/profile, still bugged many places and GPU usage were all over the place. Felt jittery. Again I disabled SLI. And then sold the 2nd card. In between this and Far Cry 3, I've had numerous of other issues. Some games worked "fine" with other SLI profiles, some did not. I was tired of tinkering around just because I wanted to play the games on release and not weeks or months later.


It's funny when some people claim SLI/CF simply works every single time, yet game forums are spammed on pretty much every release with multi gpu users that are having issues.

Today I prefer a single powerful GPU. Never any issues, it just works. Low frametimes and smooth gameplay.

When I see my friends CF/SLI setups I find it much less smooth, especially when they use low/mid-end cards, the minimum fps spikes are horrible. Something you learn to live with I guess. It's almost like going from a 144 Hz monitor, back to 60 Hz. It's just not as smooth. After some time you forget about it and think it's fine..

If DX12/Vulkan improves multi GPU alot, I might try it again at some point, right now, no thanks..
