I see that you have a 5820 as mentioned below. Stick with that and upgrade in a year or two.

Very nice Jpmboy. thumb.gif

I see the thermal grizzly there in pic. Trying that now for the first time. Easy to use, liking it so far. See how it stands up over time now.

so no need to copper the Vram & mofset?
problem with fan replacing is the connector from pump to the fan as a 2 pin, while most fans comes with 3/4 pin (like nactua the best IMO) connector, i had issue with my 980 and the EVGA fan was unbearable, so i had to replace to nactua 120mm fan and connect to the MOBO (dident had molex for PSU)
i really like to put a shroud for aesthetic looks and to exhaust the air from card out.
My pleasure. Also, you are correct. There's really no real need for the copper ramsinks that I put on the heat spreader. It won't help your overclock one bit. If you think about it, the stock vapor chamber cooler does not have any thermal compound linking it to the heat spreader. It's not even really touching the heat spreader. If anything, simply removing the hot object is ordinarily radiating a small amount of heat to the RAM heat spreader would actually improve the heat dissipation of that heat spreader because it's getting a tiny bit more airflow and no longer has a hot object millimeters away.

Also keep in mind that the hottest parts of the VRMs (the high and low side MOSFETs that are placed to the right of the chokes, away from the GPU core) are actively cooled by the right side of the heat spreader, which is directly connected to a small heat sink that's cooled by the stock blower fan and exhausts out the rear of the card near the power connectors, just like in the stock setup. I just wanted to keep the parts that don't really get very warm (RAM, left side components of the VRMs) a bit cooler than they already were. Totally unneeded, though in the long run it may help these components last marginally longer (though if Nvidia designed the card with any real cooling of these components to begin with, you have to assume it can run safely without improving this).

As for fan control, I definitely agree that you should replace the fan. Noctua fans are great, but usually not ideal for high static pressure applications (water-cooling radiators), which is why I suggested the venerable Gentle Typhoon, which is generally regarded as the best radiator fan, even now that there are newer alternatives like the Vardar fans by EK that offer similar static pressure at a higher noise level. That said, anything would be an improvement over the loud stock fan, and as you said, you can control the RPM with a motherboard fan header.

If you really, really want to have the shroud for aesthetics, it's still possible. You just need to make the tiny cut in the 1080 hybrid's heat spreader to accommodate that last VRM choke at the top. I would be very careful though if you do this to make sure that you fully clear that VRM and don't have a raised part of the heat spreader. If you do have a raised part, the water block on the GPU core won't make full contact with the die, and you'll instantly kill your chip. So if you do this, just make sure that when you place the block on the GPU core that you see thermal compound make its way to all parts of the core and a corresponding part of the water block.

THe EK blocks do a great job... loops of Heaven 4.0 at 2063/5500 and the core temp is less than 10C higher than the coolant.
Coolant "Cold" side 29-30C. Core temps only in the mid 30s. redface.gif
