A GTX 980 (non-Ti) can still fetch around $220~ USD...unless you're playing at 4K with a TXP and REALLY into a game that takes advantage of a dedicated PhysX card, you're much better off selling it (you're not going to get $200+ worth of performance out of the 980 in a PhysX game if you're already using a TXP).

I have a spare Asus Strix 1070 laying around and wondering whether it's a good idea to add it to my Titan SLI as a dedicated PhysX. (Occupies PCI-E lane, heat, power etc)

Edit: 6950X with X99 has 40 PCI-E lanes, so.. Should be ok in terms of lane.

This would be an absolute waste for TXPs in SLI; sell that 1070. You stand to gain literally nothing from having a $450 dedicated Pascal PhysX card when you're running a single 2560x1440p @ 144hz monitor that won't even take full advantage of 2x TXPs as it is.

If I were in your position i'd sell the 1070 AND your S2716DG and either get an Acer Predator X34 or a 4k display...but if you're not interested in either then get your $400+ back anyway and stash it away for the next inevitable Volta SLI upgrade before its value depreciates (unless you really hate money and/or are too lazy to resell. Either way, the 1070 would be wasted heat and electricity).

1070 being a waste for dedicated PhysX, I have to agree with you.
As for monitor, nah..
I also am a videophile who loves eye candy.
Used to own Sony GDM-FW900 since 2001.
For me, 4K panels are not there yet.
2560x1440@144Hz > 4K@60Hz for me, currently.

The last but not least, your comment on 2560x1440@144Hz monitor not taking full advantage of TXP SLI, I have no idea what you're talking about. I can get 1080P monitor taking full advantage of TXP SLI. Downsampling, DSR, SGSSAA.. the list goes on.

It was just a suggestion; i'm pretty sure most people are waiting on 4k@120hz+, but some prefer higher, native resolutions over FPS.

Sure, mods and upsampling/DSR can take advantage of lower resolution monitors, but i'm speaking in generalities; most people do not dabble in DSR and upsampling because the performance hit on likely smaller monitors isn't worth it when people can take advantage of native 2k-4k displays with appropriate sizes.

"Generally speaking" without upsampling or DSR 2x TXPs will destroy pretty much every game on the planet right now at 2560x1440p @144hz with every in-game setting at the highest outside of the most taxing SSAA implementations and still 144hz 99.9% of the time. Sticking a 1070 in scenarios where DSR/upsampling is used in the very limited PhysX games as it is is STILL not likely to make much of a difference, if at all, in any of those games...you'd basically be choosing to a $450 PhysX paperweight card while simultaneously heating up your house and consuming more electricity. But if that's what you want because you feel like it will make a difference, that is certainly your prerogative. thumb.gif

But if that's what you want because you feel like it will make a difference, that is certainly your prerogative. thumb.gif
Understood and vaild point. :-)
I won't waste my time installing 1070 as a dedicated PhysX.

Yeah, we've come a long way since the days of using the 400 Series as beneficial PhysX cards....architecture changes since then basically means that GPUs below the mid-high end GTX 700 series used as dedicated PhysX cards are likely to have a NEGATIVE effect on performance; you now need a "decent" card that won't slow down your primary GPU if you want to see performance increases using a dedicated PPU, but that "decent" extra PhysX card has to make financial sense before it's not at all worth it.

If you have Pascals in SLI I would never recommend getting a third card to run for dedicated PhysX as those two in SLI should be able to handle everything including PhysX; however, with a single 1060/1070/1080/TXP I could definitely see some benefits from having a GTX 7xx as a dedicated PhysX card.

I'd imagine that anything higher than a GTX 7xx card would be a waste, especially if you don't have that extra card already as then you're just getting into "might as well pick up a second GPU for SLI instead" territory (why would you waste money on a dedicated physx card instead of just outright going for SLI, which would have a bigger net performance increase).

No worries dude, i've experienced the pain firsthand of trying to squeeze out that extra bit of performance, particularly with using a dedicated PhysX card...I tried that various times since my GTX 470 SLI days (using a GTX 260 as dedicated PhysX and then getting GTX 480 SLI and using a GTX 470 as PhysX ), it was ALWAYS disappointing. tongue.gif
