[ Build Log ] x99 Define S Transplant

Project Transplant

I should start by saying welcome to my first build log as well as my first custom loop. Feel free to offer any suggestion/tips if you see anything blatantly incorrect. thumb.gif

The components I have now will be transplanted into a new case, the Fractal Design Define S and I intend to do my first custom sleeving for the PSU as well. The theme I'm going for is black and white. All of the parts have been ordered and only a few are on their way.

Current build: (Click to show)
i7 5280k (stock)
MSI x99 SLI Plus
16GB 2133MHz Gskill ripjaws
980 EVGA Superclocked 2.0 ACX in SLI
EVGA bridge
EVGA supernova 1000W P2
NZXT Kraken x61
Corsair AF120 red LED (x2)
Noctua NF-A14 (x2)
3 TB HDD (two drives)
560 GB SSD (two drives)
NZXT s340

Parts ordered: (Click to show)
Fractal Design Define S
EK-FC980 GTX - Nickel/Plexi (x2)
EK-FC980 GTX BackPlates (x2)
EK-FC Terminal DUAL Serial - Plexi
EK EVO Supremacy Plexi/Nickel CPU block
EK-CoolStream CE 280 (returned, as I misread this as 240mm)
EK-CoolStream PE 240 (on the way)
EK-CoolStream XE 360
EK-Vardar F3-120 (1850rpm) (x5 on the way)
EK Pastel White coolant
XSPC Photon 270 combo pump/res
Alphacool HT 13mm Compression Fittings (x12)
PrimoChill 1/2in Rigid PETG Tubing - 36in - Clear (4 Pack)
Swiftech 8-Way PWM Splitter Box
Thermal Grizzly Aeronaut
Teleios sleeving (white, grey, black)
MFC Custom 18AWG Wire
Male/Female connectors for CPU, MOBO, 2 GPU's

Current questions/issues:

As shown in the ordered parts, I ordered the wrong rad and have to send it back. Ordered an EK PE 240 instead.
  • Should I use the thermal paste included with the blocks or the Grizzly paste?
  • I might have ordered the wrong tubing for the fittings. Upon testing it looks like they're the same dimensions and won't fit.
  • Should I run the rads both in push to exhaust out the back, or one in push (360) the other pull (240)?

I will update with pictures as best I can and unfortunately as of right now I only own a smartphone camera so we'll see how well they turn out.

Thanks! I love the looks of it and it seems as close to perfect as a case can get. Plenty of space for cooling, beautifully crafted, hard drives in the back, no bays. The Nano S looks awesome too but I couldn't throw SLI in that very well and cool it.

Again, if anyone has input on the questions I posed feel free to help out. I'll try and post a picture of the idea I have for my loop. Written out it would be: pump -> GPU's -> CPU -> rad up top (240) -> rad in front (360) -> reservoir.

could also go: pump -> GPU's -> rad up top (240) -> CPU -> rad in front (360) -> reservoir.

Love the case. I just picked one up today.

For your loop, I would go GPU , rad, cpu, rad, res. At least, that's how I plan on doing mine.

That makes sense, I figured that would keep the temps in the CPU lower since it gets a chance to cool before water reaches it.

I've taken everything out of the S340 and cleaned everything up with an air compressor. I'll probably go over everything with a cloth at some point too. I ordered the wrong thermal paste which will be here mid next week and that means I can seat the CPU block or put on the GPU blocks. Oh well rolleyes.gif

I'm also waiting on a ATX crimper from Mainframe Customs so I'll be sleeving here shortly.

Today I put in the motherboard into the Define S and cleaned up the thermal paste. Although not pictured, I took out the 360mm rad and the res to get an idea of how big they actually were in the case. I'm a little concerned about where I'm going to route the tubing for the rad.

much better biggrin.gif

Fractal Design included this standoff extender which goes onto the standoff and you can hand-tighten everything much easier in the hard-to-reach places which I thought was pretty cool.

We need a pic to see your clearances. You can but the rad ports on the bottom if that helps.

I should get my fans tomorrow so I'll be able to show you what it's like with the EK XE in there. I'll probably post a couple of pics with the res in too.
