Oh, and if you overclock the 8350 to 4.5 GHz, you should have no problems.

Around 50-60 @ 1080p. I can only get the 8350 or the RX 480 though. That's why I asked upgrade FX6100 > FX8350 or GTX 770 > RX 480.

I'd get the 8350 (should do much better with the 770 than the 6100) or just wait and save up for new components. If you can wait 9 months, Zen might have something for you.

There'd be no point in an RX 480 if you're playing at 1080p on that system. It's just going to default to being a CPU bottleneck at that resolution, and you're probably going to see more stuttering and hitching than you do now.

Well heck I might as well just get an Intel board and an Intel CPU because the 6100 and the 8350 just don't seem like it would run very well.

I mean, sure, it's your money. You asked about a processor vs. a GPU, and I originally misunderstood what you were asking. But based on "can do one or the other" then the smart money would be on the processor. They are known to do well with mid-range GPUs. The 770 isn't a slouch when it is overclocked. It's more VRAM limited than anything.

Well I was thinking of the i3-6100 with an Intel board. I have no clue how Intel processors really perform as I've never had one. The problem is finding enough concrete data to really justify one direction vs the other. It's very disappointing. I just ran Skyrim and my FX-6100 core 0 has 90-100% usage and the others are between 60-80% so I'm almost at the limits it seems right now which is a little worrisome.

i3 6100 is just a little better than the 8350. When the 8350 is overclocked, it's competitive but the instructions per clock (IPC) isn't there, which is where the Core i3 will beat it. The disadvantage to the i3 is no overclocking, and just limited compared to an i5 or better. The i3 will bottleneck on some GPUs, that much has been proven. Even a slower i5 / past gen i5 can if someone is trying to run something like a 980 Ti or better on it. For the most part, though, all of that "bottlenecking" business is limited to 1080p resolutions and lower. Once you get to 1440p, they even out. If you ran with a virtual / super resolution of 1440p or had a 1440p monitor, then the bottleneck is really going to be the GPU most of the time, which is where you want it.

Long story short, sure Intel is faster right now, we don't know what Zen looks like yet - promise of 40% better IPC, 4 and 8 Core desktop parts, limited availability at the high end later this year.

Intel is also going to cost you more, no question about it. You have to get a new motherboard + RAM, since DDR4 is pretty much a requirement. You can't carry any old DDR3 over to Skylake processors. It has to be uncommon DDR3L and then only certain motherboards support that. 99.999% probability you don't have any of that.
I would save up. Most games are lightly threaded. Getting an 8350 would make no difference, not to mention overclocking a CPU with your motherboard could mean a house fire. redface.gif

Wait for Zen and whatever Intel will have.

That's what I thought, the performance gained from going with the new FX processors wouldn't be much because the IPC performance increase is very small.
