Basic laptop questions about putting videos on a second monitor / TV via "extended desktop"

Thread Starter
I'm getting a laptop and I want a big tv / monitor to accompany it at home. I typically have 2-3 videos on at a time (youtube, Twitch, CNN etc) and I'd probably have 1 on always on the big TV using a extended desktop option.

My questions:

1. Generally is this really performance heavy? Can I do it with a Dell XPS 13 (Intel Core i5-6200U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD)

2. Does the graphics card or anything like that from my laptop effect the video quality on the TV or monitor??

3. Is it possible to have a 1080p laptop screen and then have 4k on the extended desktop monitor / TV?? (Another way of asking this question is whether you can have 4k videos on a TV connected to a 1080p laptop.)

THANKS

What kind of 'Big TV'? You should be very careful buying that TV. Would not want to get a 40 inch TV with 1280x760 native resolution. You have to make sure of the native resolution of the tv itself first brfore buying it.

1- Those specs should be more than enough, my i5 2520M can do all of those things at the same time no problem.

2- It can, since you seem like you will be using a 4k TV, you should make sure that the GPU can do 4:4:4 60hz @ 4k. I know that you won't be gaming on it, but lower refresh rates just make using the screen feel slow. 4:4:4 has an effect on image quality (usually important for text), so it is up to you if you feel the need to be able to do it . Afaik most (all?) videos are presented in 4:2:0, as it lowers the file size. Just something to think about if you want to read text on the tv ever.

3- 4k extension will work perfectly except your cursor may get "caught" in a corner/edge, but that is only because the resolutions don't line up with each other (the 4k resolution has more pixel-height so when moving to the other screen you need to move the mouse to where the 1080p resolution starts before it'll move back to that display).

Do you need it to be an extension of the screen, or could a chromecast do what you want? No load on the laptop, no plugs to hook up every evening...

Not 4k but youtube and CNN at least aren't putting out much/any 4k content.
